It comes from a brilliant creative contamination between the designer Juliana Bonafaccia Mancinelli and audiovisual performers Radiolarian Quiet Ensemble Project, a unique multi-sensory performances, presented for the first time in Rome, in the Events Calendar Extras AltaRoma, for new collection of jewelry designers.

Juliana Mancinelli Bonafaccia in the new collection offers a line of necklaces, bracelets and rings, inspired by the work of Ernst Haeckel, in particular single-celled organisms represented in the tables of "Die Radiolarien" of 1862. Hence the name of the collection. Research, exploration and experimentation, dictates that push the creative talent to create unique individual pieces. Originally a designer of diamanté-encrusted G-strings for New York strippers, Ukrainian-born Nudie Cohn and his wife moved to Hollywood in 1947. There, they originated the riotous, embroidered-within-an-inch-of-its-life rhinestone cowboy look one usually associates with Liberace, Elton John and an older Elvis Presley. In fact, Cohn created Elvis Presley's signature $10,000 gold lamé suit, as well as Hank Williams' white cowboy suit with music notes on the sleeves, and similarly festive numbers for Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, John Wayne, Cher, Elton John, Dolly Parton, John Lennon, and Johnny Cash. Reportedly, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren have been inspired by what became known as Nudie suits.
Here's the thing. This won't be a straight (although Nudie was, perhaps surprisingly) retrospective, but an examination of the personal collection of Bobbejaan Schoepen, a Belgian entertainer and lifelong client. The first of its kind in Europe, the exhibit will feature all manner of dazzling head-to-toe creations, accessories and ephemera, a celebration of Cohn's exuberant aesthetic and the friendship between the two.

With the opening of a new multi-label store on the Kurfürstendamm, Berlin’s bustling shopping boulevard, Karl-Heinz Müller, 14 oz. owner and managing director of BREAD & butter GmbH & Co. KG, is sending out a high-profile message by using the successful 14 oz. concept to connect both of Berlin’s inner city centres.

The Berlin districts of Mitte in the east of the city and Charlottenburg in the west could hardly be more different. From autumn 2012 the second 14 oz. multi-label store will be creating a permanent link between urban, casual street style and classic chic on Berlin’s most prestigious shopping mile. With 14 oz. in the historic ‘Cumberland House’ building on Kurfürstendamm, the first port of call in the western part of the city is being established for connoisseurs who appreciate and personify the attitude associated with tradition, individuality and authenticity.

The Cumberland building was designed between 1911 and 1912 by architect Robert Leibnitz as an exclusive boarding house, but was never used as such. During the past century it instead housed international guests as a grand hotel and later the building was used by cultural institutions and different financial administration offices. Following its loving restoration and elaborate renovation, next year the Cumberland will be experiencing a renaissance: impressive retail spaces, luxurious owner-occupied apartments and an exclusive gastronomy area reflect the revival of the Kurfürstendamm in a future-oriented post-millennium era.

Architects Ansgar Schmidt and Henning Ziepke were also responsible for the design of the first 14 oz. store in Berlin-Mitte. They assisted Karl-Heinz Müller with the launch of BREAD & BUTTER more than ten years ago, going on to manage the Event Architecture department for several years.

Ansgar Schmidt: “We are picking up on the existing identity and atmosphere of this special location. We are capturing its grandeur, using it and confidently putting it in a new context. We are absolutely delighted and proud to be given the opportunity to rise to this challenge together with Karl-Heinz Müller.”

EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW

Yesterday, on Thursday evening, Karl-Heinz Müller welcomed around 200 guests to Cumberland House for an exclusive preview. s1 architektur designed the provisional shell of the premises, which is still in the building phase, to look like a New York gentlemen’s club for one night only, and more than did justice to the unique location. Illuminated walls, Chesterfield sofas and the bar area formed a charming contrast to the concrete floor and the unfinished ceilings.

After Karl-Heinz Müller welcomed the guests, Dr. Thomas Bscher said a few words about the Kurfürstendamm location, followed by a speech from Ansgar Schmidt about the plans for the interior concept of the new 14 oz. store in the west of the city.

The guests were granted an exclusive insight into the future design of the premises, which has six-metre-high ceilings, as shown by a fashion exhibition from the fifties and sixties personally curated by F.C. Gundlach. From autumn 2012, a hand-picked selection of large prints of original photographs will be integrated into the interior concept of the new multi-label store as part of a permanent exhibition. The icon of German fashion photography jumped at the opportunity to summarise 150 years of the history and development of fashion in Berlin in a presentation, as well as providing a view of the fashion city’s future.

The guests were thoroughly impressed by the spectacular setting, historic grandeur and visionary interior design of House Cumberland. A buzz of conversation could be heard as they indulged in culinary delicacies by borchardt catering, accompanied by live music from the jazz combo Barfleas.

The surprise guest of the evening, musician and entertainer Helge Schneider, kept the guests amused with his thoughts on fashion, as well as singing and music on his Hammond organ, before DJ Hell and later DJ Kaos stepped up to the turntables. Everyone had a great time at the exclusive preview and enjoyed a fantastic evening that lasted until the early hours of the morning.

Blogs and magazines have been buzzing for months about the first ever exclusive fashion collaboration between Japan’s Sanrio and the international powerhouse Forever 21. The “Forever 21 For Hello Kitty Collection” finally landed with a splash last night in stores across Japan. To celebrate the arrival of the much-hyped collaboration, Forever 21 threw a big party at their Shibuya location. Not only did crowds show up to check out the new collection, shop, and have a good time, but Hello Kitty herself hosted the party!

The Forever 21 For Hello Kitty Collection is a limited edition line that includes dresses, blouses (some with bows, of course), sequined tops, t-shirts, outerwear (some in animal prints and faux leather), lingerie/sleepwear, jewelry, and accessories. The items in the Hello Kitty collection are in the same price range as regular Forever 21 fashion, ranging from under US$5 up to around US$30. The items are available in Japan starting on November 10th, and in the United States from November 18th. The collection can be purchased in stores as well as online at the Forever 21 web store.
We were lucky enough to score an invite to the Forever 21 For Hello Kitty Collection launch party at Forever 21 Shibuya. We brought back lots of pictures – and even video – to share with you. The event featured giveaways, photo sessions with Hello Kitty, special presents for anyone buying lots of Hello Kitty goodies, and nail artists creating custom Hello Kitty nail art for lucky guests.
Besides all of the launch party fun and the cute, reasonably-priced items in the collection, we were also excited that Chubby Bunny – a friend of Tokyo Fashion, and someone with close ties to Japan – was involved in styling Hello Kitty for this event. Michelle from Chubby Bunny is Los Angeles’s reigning queen of everything bow-y! Chubby Bunny has worked with a number of Japanese fashion brands, and Michelle lived in Japan for many years, making her somewhat of an expert on authentic Japanese “kawaii”. The cute polka dot bows designed by her were all over the launch party – worn by the friendly Forever 21 shop staff and even by Hello Kitty herself! Fashion magazines are filled with ads, sometimes upstaging the articles. They range from the cheesy to the sleazy, cliché to outré. Eagle-eyed readers of W will spot a few over-the-top examples in the magazine’s new art issue, on stands now. Another socialite scent? Check. A group of not-quite-golden gals peddling cucumber-green face cream? Yup. Overdone toddler posing in expensive clothing? You got it.
The fake ads are a tongue-in-cheek collaboration between veteran photographer Steven Meisel and the magazine’s new fashion director, Edward Enninful, who's quickly injecting the glossy with some cheeky English humor. And speaking of cheeky, one of the more clutch-pearls images is a faux underwear ad featuring Karen Elson with a bevy of naked male models, each with little more than red spank marks on his bum.
The other photographs riff on familiar fashion magazine tropes, from the fragrance ad to the designer surrounded by his creations. They star a wide range of famous faces, such as a fur-clad Joan Rivers alongside fellow QVC pitchman Dennis Basso, a showering Linda Evangelista, and nude RuPaul protégé Carmen Carrera as the face (and rear) of the imaginary scent La Femme. But reality stars and bare flesh aside, the most shocking thing about these ads might just be how close they are to the real thing—art imitating ads imitating life.

E sarà proprio l’es.Hotel, domenica 25, ad aprire le porte a Mercato Monti. Già dalle 11 di mattina il market show ha inizio. Oltre 50 banchi, provenienti da tutta Italia, testimonieranno che gli obiettivi del mercato sono stati raggiunti. Una vetrina immediata per i giovani creativi che, in questo momento più che mai, si perdono nella crisi generale. Risorse tutte italiane che, altrimenti, annegherebbero nella difficoltà di trovare spazio per realizzare e mostrare le loro produzioni. Il secondo obiettivo è rivolto ai consumatori. In alternativa allo shopping nelle, oramai, inaccessibili boutique, Mercato Monti propone al suo pubblico ricerca, qualità, prezzi convenienti.

Un mercato fatto di:

Produzioni indipendenti di abiti, t-shirt, giacche, cappotti e accessori (cappelli, orecchini, collane, scarpe, borse), disegnati e realizzate da stilisti emergenti, con un attento lavoro di ricerca su stile e materiali.
Produzioni indipendenti di arredo, create da giovani artigiani, designer e architetti, per la casa ed il giardino (piccolo mobilio, lampade)

Non manca naturalmente la parte dedicata al vintage, diventata una vera mania per il pubblico di Mercato Monti. Tanti gli espositori che dedicano una spasmodica ricerca verso tutto quello che ha fatto la storia della moda e del design. Foulard, borse, scarpe, abiti, bijoux, dalle griffe italiane, francesi e inglesi, selezionate con cura e proposte a prezzi competitivi.

Sylvio Giardina presents Nuptus: the new Spring/Summer 2012 collection, showed in Hothouse, the space dedicated to experimentation and creativity of young talents I’m proud of the Milan ready-to-wear.
It’s called Nuptus the new Sylvio Giardina’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. 14 outfits inspired by the concept of the veil, of the cloud, a shape which could change and transform herself. That’s the result of a research of a new silhouette: distorting the aesthetic, the female body is summed up in a flexible vision in opposition to the glossy, standardized images of the traditional fashion circuit. The SS 2012 collection draws the body in soft shapes - and dynamic too - redefines the proportions and the sinuous lines with great volumes. Main theme, in fact, the idea of the sphericity of the female body that accompanies every outfit designed just for the purpose of feeling the body of every woman, free and easy. The movements are fluid, almost liquid, and reflected in a futuristic use of polyethylene foam and jersey that merge into a unicum, creating a sculptural impact of unchallenged leaders in which glide drops of Swarovski crystals in plastic inlays like. White, black, orange, copper, light blue and green inspired by military uniforms dye jersey, jeans, leather, worked-cotton to settle the collection of jackets, vests, t-shirts, shirts, skirts, pants and dresses born only to enhance freedom in the body and the movements. This is demonstrated by the large volumes and the soft lines that embellish sometimes inlaid glass and drapery fabric to highlight the curves and shapes.

Sylvio Giardina is a creative person with dual identities, embodied happily in fashion (as a designer of haute couture) and art (as a visual artist). His research often reveals stylistic expression of consonance with its visionary artistic inspiration, which is currently focused and committed to the launch of its new brand Sylvio Giardina.

Si chiama Nuptus la nuova collezione firmata Sylvio Giardina per la Primavera/Estate 2012. Ispirandosi alla concezione di velo e di nuvola, intesi come forme in continua trasformaizone, ecco 14 outfit frutto della continua ricerca di una nuova silhouette. Stravolgendo i canoni estetici, il corpo femminile riassume una visione libera e flessibile che si contrappone all’immagine patinata delle figure filiformi e standardizzate del circuito moda tradizionale. La collezione SS 2012 disegna così una forma corporea morbida - e al tempo stesso dinamica - che ridefinisce le proporzioni stabilendo nuove sinuose linee e volumi aggettanti. Tema portante, infatti, l’idea della sfericità del corpo femminile che accompagna ogni abito concepito proprio con lo scopo di rendere libero il corpo di ogni donna, libero di sentirsi a proprio agio. Il bianco, il nero, l’arancio ramato, il celeste polvere e il verde ispirato alle uniformi militari tingono il jersey, il jeans, la pelle, il cotone operato, per comporre la collezione di capi spalla, gilet, t-shirt, camice, gonne, pantaloni e abiti nati esclusivamente per esaltare la libertà nel corpo e nei movimenti. Lo dimostrano i volumi ampi e le linee morbide che si impreziosiscono talvolta di intarsi in cristallo e drappeggi del tessuto per evidenziare le curve e le forme.

If art indeed has its basis in life, then Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel has given us plenty to work with. Consider, for instance, the luminous string of actresses who have portrayed her on stage and screen over the course of the past four decades: Audrey Tautou, Katharine Hepburn, Shirley MacLaine. And like the lady of the hour, their talent was unmistakable, incandescent, one-of-a-kind.

Chanel's name first transformed, then epitomized, the luxury womenswear market in the 20th century, with thousands of 2.55-toting pilgrims journeying to her quarters at 31 Rue Cambon since her death in 1971. But the designer—born 128 years ago today—did not always operate from a position of privilege. Born to poverty-stricken parents, she spent her formative years shuttling between a convent and the homes of various seamstress aunts, where she picked up the art of sewing. The teenaged Gabrielle then worked as a cabaret performer at the Moulins circuses, earning the definitive nickname Coco, before retiring from the stage and opening up her own clothing shop at the turn of the century.

While initially a milliner, she began constructing outfits made from inexpensive jersey, a move that was unheard of, since the material was traditionally used to produce men's underwear. Over the next fifty years, the iconic interlocking Cs served as a venerable code of arms for all things chic and classy: pearl necklaces, tweed suits, ballet pumps, even perfume.

Blessed with razor-sharp instincts and a natural flair for business, Chanel's humble beginnings had beaten a pathway to the gilded sidewalks of Rue Cambon and into the bedrock of history. In spite of her monumental acclaim, she remained every bit an individualist. "The best color in the whole world," she was once quoted as saying, "is the one that looks good on you."

There were, inevitably, rumors that Chanel was an anti-Semite, a Nazi spy, an opium-abuser. There had been a series of torrid affairs, some with married men. While her accomplishments were widely praised, many spoke also of her inscrutability, and her deep-seated loneliness. But there is no denying that Coco was a born survivor, gifted with a preternatural brilliance that is reflected in the durability of her empire. Having already conquered two World Wars, that empire is now set to weather some of the worst economic crises of the modern age.

And there was, above all else, that omnipresent zest for life. "I am not young but I feel young. The day I feel old, I will go to bed and stay there. J'aime la vie!" And we're betting she was impeccably dressed the entire time, too.

It's All Greek to Mastori*Motwary

An all-over flower print dress by Mastori*Motwari Studio—aka Maria Mastori and Filep Motwary—features all over the poster for a fashion exhibit currently on view at the Mode Museum Hasselt in Belgium. In very good company, the duo counts Hermès, Pucci, Dries Van Noten and Lanvin as fellow contributors. It's just the latest triumph for the Athens-born, Paris-based designers. Here, they discuss their Grecian formula.

The two of you are well-known as a Greek fashion partnership. Can you describe how you got together?

Filep: It was never planned, really. We were both working for a designer [in Athens]. Maria was responsible for the jewelry and I was working as the first assistant designer. We would only say hi or smile to each other. Then I left for Paris to see if I was meant for this business. Maria supported me in this decision. I decided to stay in Paris, working as an intern for John Galliano, Dior, Chloé and as a sales boy for Erotokritos. Two years later I went back to Athens. Maria wanted some costumes to present her new jewelry pieces with. I guess the rest is history.

You said in an interview that you’re not sure where you stand in the Greek fashion landscape. Has that changed at all?
Filep: Unfortunately, Athens hasn’t really changed. Indeed there are a lot of talented Greeks, but 90% of them receive the recognition they deserve outside their birthplace. It’s not normal. On the other hand, there is this 10% that is talented and still live in Athens. With their precious support, faith and help, we have created some of our most memorable Mastori*Motwary creations.

Your designs work together like a dream. Have you considered collaborating with other people as well?
Maria: We always work with other people. Our project Nuptialis stars in a great fashion film directed by French directors and photographers Suzie Q and Leo Siboni, with the support of Moonwalking films, Vogue.it and Stimuleye.com. None of these people live in Greece, but to get it finished, it would have been impossible without the help of our Greek friends.

From what I’ve seen of the Nuptialis exhibition, it’s almost like an epic Gothic romance. Can you take us through your inspiration behind it?
Maria: Nuptialis is a story based on womanhood, wisdom, virginity, sex, tradition, the marital ceremony and the symbolism of flowers. The collection is about two complete outfits, made in 2010, by using vintage couture techniques and finished in approximately three weeks. When we placed them on the mannequins in our Athens studio, we received an email from [fashion curator and author] Lydia Kamitsis. She was preparing an exhibition in Athens based on traditional garments, with the participation of foreign and local designers. She asked if we had something to show her. We did, and instantly she chose one of the two Nuptialis outfits. We had already photographed it with our close collaborators Thanassis Krikis and fashion editor Nicholas Georgiou, so there was a complete concept around it, even before Madame Kamitsis contacted us. Nevertheless, her exhibition was a success and one year later we received a request to participate in PRINTS, an exhibition hosted by the Hasselt Mode Museum in Belgium, featuring other designers like Dries Van Noten, Hermès, Pucci and Miu Miu. We feel honored to be on the cover of the exhibition catalog.

Some have described your work as taking fabric and textures to the "next level." How do you feel about that?
Filep: Maybe is true as year by year people get older, more experienced and more solid. It’s the nature of things. If this evolution is also visible in our work, then we take it as a compliment.

Filep, it’s been years since you started designing under your own label. How has the journey been?
It’s been long and not easy. You see, I have always been a dreamer. I am more in the subconscious than in the conscious. I see fashion as a language through which I can express myself. The sounds of this language are the fabrics, the models, the storyboards, the feeling I get when I see my creations put in a context or in movement. I tried almost everything in order to make my work more accessible: retailing, selling one-off pieces, made-to-measure garments. Each of these communicative categories demands a different point of view and approach. I reject them all. I want to make clothes when I am ready and when my consciousness asks for it. A collection could be only one dress; another collection could be 40 dresses. It makes no difference to me, as long as I get pleasure from what I created. I make my own rules and hopefully there is someone out there, apart from Maria, who understands my point of view. But I am young still. There is so much to learn, so many people that will come across my way. Fashion is a way for me to be. This is why I serve it in many other ways, apart from making clothes. I am also a journalist who's interviewed many fashion pioneers.

How do you think your clothes best represent women of today?
That’s a tough one. Yes, I do design for women, but I am not sure if all women could be represented by my clothes. They are for the few, those few who need something more than a dress. The dress should be just a small detail to the whole of a personality.

Maria, your jewelry has been touted as quasi-couture. How has the collaboration with Filep and his costumes been?
Naturally, anything created under the context of a common project with Filep is under the same vision. I am never worried whether or not a piece can go with a garment. My jewelry becomes an attachment to the garment, like the aliens in that Sigourney Weaver movie. Then, together they are reborn as something complete. This is how we always do it. Of course we discuss the collections before we move to production, but not everything can be always controlled, otherwise there would be no room for surprises.

You’ve obviously had a strong legacy in jewelry. What do you think the future of jewelry is?
I am very optimistic for the future of jewelry since they have become much more current than they were a decade ago. A necklace, ring or bracelet always brings happiness when worn. It represents a personal attire message. Regarding the design process, I am glad the industry has evolved to such a high level, introducing new materials for me to work with day by day.

The 2nd Edition of Delhi Couture Week (DCW) kicked off in the capital on 22nd July. With 12 Courtiers, including JJ Valaya, Manish Malhotra & Rohit Bal participating. TFW gives s sneak peak of these Shows - A 4 day Fashion Event finishing on 25th July..

Suneet Varma

With his version of Kamasutra, presented clothes that adorn the body and bejewel the soul exploring female sensuality with this collection. Used soft, sheer fabrics in a palette of fuschia, navy, ivory, black and silver on Zardozi koti shrugs and sheer skirts.

The lacy numbers and use of sheer fabric dominated the feminine bridal wear. Traditional embroidery; zardozi, kundan and intricate thread-work to bring out the luxe factor in his outfits. A shimmering bejewelled sari worn by svelte model Jesse Randhawa.

Models adorned interesting pointed headgears, payals and heavily embellished short choli shrugs to complete the look.

Rich Indian colours, like crimson and fuchsia, and paired them with gold panel borders to create ruffled lehengas, saris, shararas and anarkalis. Experimenting with shades of Prussian blue, jet black and silver embellishments for a separate line of cocktail garments. mix of lighter shades of pink, yellow, aquamarine, teal and peach

Shantanu and Nikhil

A dreamy collection from the Western vintage era, meant for a “Contemporary Bride, who wants to break the rules and be uninhibited.

Designer duo channeled European charm of years gone by with gramophones and dainty umbrellas as props whereas the ensembles featured oodles of lace and thread embroidery. Draped ensembles in delicate textures & fluid fabrics.

Collection ‘Perfume’- a collection personifying vintage royalty inspired by the 'Elizabethan era' with a hint of exuberance.

Colours ranged from pale blues to black, orange, yellow, pinks, peaches and pale greens. hues of Baby Pink, Aqua Blue & Dusty Orange.

Ensemble/Treatment: Long trailing lehenga skirts, liberal use of frills and ruffles, cowl backs, simple velvet ‘barely there’ blouses and texturing through pin-tucking and cutwork. Primary fabrics used were satin, net and lace.

Concept sarees and flouncy multilayered. A collection of white coloured gowns in satin and net.
A line of cocktail gowns, saris, lehengas and long jackets using rich fabrics like tulle, silk, satin, velvet and taffeta. Use of antique laces, pearls, crystals and minimal metallic embellishments at the waist area. Outfits were highlighted by using high ruffled collars, embellished necks, rosette motifs and heavy layering in the bottom.

Models walked in their crystal-studded ‘meringue-like’ gowns, with Doris Day’s Dream A Little Dream of Me playing in the background. Model Joey Matthews opened the show and strutted seductively in a lavish orange gown with metallic silver embroidery at the bodice.

Showstopper: Sonakshi Sinha (in an ivory-white lehenga paired with high-collar white fitted embroidered jacket, which was studded with crystals and silver embroidery.)

Rohit Bal

The Designer’s collection named "Shanti" displayed his signature style - floral motifs in different patterns on the garments. The collection had a rich look with extensive use of zippers.

The colour contrasting palette included whites, golden, blacks, blues and purples. The collection included gowns, jackets, overcoats, lehengas, the red carpeted white gowns, the heavily embroidered Indian fare stole and anarkalis juxtaposed velvet on net, ensembles of lace and embroidery.

Amidst fragrance of jasmine flowers filling up the air and soothing piano symphony creating a special mood, fashion designer Rohit Bal brought down the curtains in a Grand Finale at DCW Everybody was being handed jasmine garlands on the way in. The runway was trimmed with large twiggy structures decorated with jasmine and pots filled with jasmine were placed on the floor. The hall was drenched with the heady scent of jasmine and incense. The theme was ‘Shaanti’ and Krishna was the muse. The collection was a mix of various heavy duty, highly textured fabrics. An incredible use of colour blocking. Crochet and net used widely with appliqué work on silk and net in pops of reds and blues. explicit embroidery.. Cascading skirts in crushed silk, flouncy organza and net, velvet waist skimming corsets and ornate floor grazing jackets made for an exceptional collection. The mens line constituted velvet jackets in royal blues and blacks, long shervanis and jackets with metallic embroidery. The show concluded with a bang as Arjun Rampal walked the ramp as the show stopper and the crowd cheered as both Rohit and Arjun went bananas showering everyone with the aforementioned jasmine. Well, we’re glad it could be of some use.

In a black velvet blazer over black shirt-pant and black shades Arjun Rampal walked the ramp for the designer. 'Show stopper' was written in bold golden letters on Arjun's shirt which he flaunted by taking off his blazer.

At the end, Bal was seen dancing his way down to join the models donning his outfits, and was later joined by Rampal. Both showered jasmine flowers petals on the guests and the models.

Varun Bahl

French – inspired “Marie Antoinette”(“collection inspired by” the bourgeois attire of 18th century Queen of France) as his muse. Bringing back the era of French courtly debauchery in a contemporary interpretation of France''s most celebrated and berated queens.

Borrowing inspiration from the Russian culture, Designer was seen experimenting with his couture collection, emphasizing a fusion of Indian and Russian royalty in terms of fashion keeping the Indian aroma alive with a touch of French royalty. With all focus on romanticism and classic tailoring, designer aimed at designing ornately draped dresses in rich hues, simultaneously paying homage to simplicity which will be well highlighted with detailing in cut and length of the dress, exuding an alluring old world charm and an almost whimsical appeal,

Ensemble/Treatment: Zardozi Lehengas, anarkalis, corset blouses. Elaborate & comprehensive corsets, with power shoulders, lace inserts, drawstring fastening, dipped hem backs, funnel sleeves, beautiful tassels, courtly cuffs, frills & rufflesd signature peplum style jackets. Lavish fabrics like: tulle(air-like), velvet, shimmering damasks ,satin, lace and cascading chiffons, broad necklines, flouncy cascading layers and magnificent sharply tailored majestic velvet jackets. flamboyant lehenga skirts, farshi-pyjamas (palazzo pants). Use of untraditional fabrics, luxurious embroideries. gold appliqué, luxurious furs and silk fabric. Use of multi coloured thread ,embroidery, patch-work, border work, shimmer sarees., lace- bordered paired with full sleeves blouse. Poufy empire-waisted tulle creation & the dramatic-shouldered velvet jacket paired with intricate pistachio lehenga. Embellished tulle skirts crafted in several layers under the outer fabric, with lots of beading and crystal work and embroidery in jewel toned thread. Gowns and intricately embroidered capes with crystals and gems galore, silhouettes and whimsical full skirts, woven in luxe fabrics, heavily adorned stone work, Royal headgears with byzantine influences & Velvet shoes.

Colour Palette consisted of pistachio hues to deep, wines, maroons, golden. bright fuchsias to decadent wines and maroons and glamorous gold’s to pure ivory-whites, cream to pastel greens, pinks, red and blues - and arresting conceptual colour pairing.

The front row was also occupied with Varun’s designer friends like Ritu Kumar, Rohit Bal, Rohit Gandhi-Rahul Khanna, Manav Gangwani and Vijay Arora.

Manish Malhotra

1930s and 1940s English influence was distinct throughout the collection. Drama played a central focus in all the ensembles with ghagaras, lehengas, suits and saris in red, gold and maroon that were offset with cream, white and mint green. The highlight of the show was Sonam Kapoor who walked the ramp in a red and gold embroidered jacket with a white lehenga that is sure to be a hit with brides-to-be.

Ensemble/Treatment: On display were some dazzling net saris, anarkalis, and lehengas in bright contrasting colours like crimson, burgundy, mint green and peacock-blue. He used traditional floral embroideries, zardozi work, semi-precious stones and thick zari borders in his ensembles to bring alive the royal era on the ramp. The pre partition era saw a distinct British influence with respect to the dressing of Indian Royalty. The collection - an amalgamation of Tradition and Contemporary will use this influence, inspired from/by the pre-partition era and was an amalgamation of tradition and contemporary (old world charm and majestic opulence of Royalty).

The color story for womens wear in combination of Cherry Reds and Burgundy’s with tones of Mint green, Aqua, and off whites. Menswear: Combinations of Blacks, Burgundys, fawn, Royal Blue, Beiges and Gold.

Show Stopper: Sonam Kapoor opened the show in a long red split-open ornate jacket(accentuated by golden embroidery) paired with a flouncy white/ivory net skirt(lehnga).

His all-time muse, actor Urmila Matondkar, who specially attended the show, looked stunning in an orange silk anarkali designed by Manish.

A Timeless Affaire. With glitter, French lame and sequined fabrics taking centre stage.

Tale of Timeless Journey - interpreted on the ramp using hues of pristine white, canary yellow and flaming oranges. The show started with a haunting din of chimes and clock sounds, and later the props depicting wheels of time, zodiac and universe emerged on the ramp.

Rich fabrics, like gold dust georgette, Italian chiffon, French lace, Chinese silk, velvet and fine tulle to create a glamorous line of gowns, voluminous skirts, flared lehengas, sensuous saris and layered anarkalis. Use of Swarovski crystals, jewelled embroidery and sequins in the outfits, sheer and fine laces.

JJ Valaya
With his interpretation of couture is his collection ‘Tasveer’. After almost two decades of establishing his label, JJ has mastered the art of designing for those with a penchant for variance and an eye for luxury. With an effective use of jamewar, metallic jacquard, resham, paisley and royal and intricate embroidery. JJ has used every possible colour in the palette in the formation of his collection. Padded shoulders, embroidered net, sequined tassels, long embroidered jackets over sarees and skirts, achkans, heavily embroidered lehengas, waist length cholis and ankle grazing skirts worn over fitted pyjamis.

His collection focused on photography and played with colours found in still images. Designer’s love for everything artistic was evident in his collection this season. Camera lenses formed the backdrop(prop-used to create the ambiance with a particular sound of camera reels amidst the music of drum beats and saxophones), which drew its inspiration from the evolving palette of still photography. Through collection, designer introduced himself as a fine art photographer on the opening day of DCW.

Ensembles.Treatment : Saris, lehngas and his signature jacket, Alika all received an opulent treatment in the form of semi-precious stones, resham work and crystals. Beginning with the monochromatic black and white, romanced with the developing colours found in still images, from sepia to hand-stained to eventually, the digital. Saris were given a contemporary twist with smart drapes, long dresses accentuated fluidity in structure. Shimmer belts in his sarees to give a structured look. His last collection had only seen a formal structure of Alika jackets but in this show they have evolved as nicely embellished jackets that can be worn over lehangas and sarees,

Front Row: Designer friends Rohit Gandhi, Rahul Khanna, Manav Gangwani, Rohit Bal, Ritu Beri, along with AD Singh, Shivani Wazir and Amir Pasrich were spotted cheering Valaya.

Kotwara by Meera and Muzaffar Ali

presented their collection themed Sama. The mood of the collection remained romantic with the use of earthy pastels on fabrics such as crepe de sheen and chiffon that provided the silhouettes a languid feel. Ikat jackets, farshi ghararas, lehngas, peshwaz & choghas. Sama, the name of Meera-Muzaffar Ali's collection shown, is also the name of their daughter.

Muzaffar Ali dressed in black shirt, Son Murad Ali was on the stage trying to make the audience swoon with English translations of Rumi, while wife Meera, dressed in her husband’s creation, was backstage with the models. Completing the family picture was daughter Sama after whom the collection was named. The designer also used his self made paintings in his creations.

An enticing collection - brought in contemporariness as a gentle rustle, without upsetting the old order of things. A satin bootie, walked in with an traditional red, fussily decked up bridal ensemble, trademark Kotwara chaura pyjamas with kurtis in gota patti. A small nude coloured net frock with black applique among traditional garments.

Anju Modi

Stuck to hues of blue on velvet jackets for the glamourous edge and chiffon to keep the collection romantic and feminine, showcased her couture collection "Maya" – the mythological muse /the ultimate seduction (conjured by the Gods as the goddess of wealth herself & was said to possess the combined material supreme power.) ' celebrating the grandeur of the Mughal epoch. It was there in the royal blue palette infused with ivory, wine and black; the Angrakhas with draped pants; the saris and lehengas crafted from Varanasi brocades, velvets and tissues hand-woveby people from different villages.

Intricate handwork and attention to detail, the collection fell into two parts: Bridal and a Power Play(Red Carpet). The latter was equally effective, especially the lame gold and cream gown worn by Shraddha Kapoor.

Bejeweled, beautified and bespoke Collection incensed with craft, style and grandeur, captured in hues of Blue, Ivory and Maroon. Impossible angrakhas, opulent saris and exaggerated lehengas in magnificent porous fabrics illustrated.

Voluminous robes and played heavily with subtle colours such as greens and mauves that complimented the zardozi techniques used on the ensembles. The resplendent Sharmila Tagore(in a graceful saree) was the showstopper.

With Amrapali as the Jewellery partner. Distinctly traditional collection - Multi shaded sarees in net, long velvet jackets, asymmetric hemlines on lehengas, peplum style jackets paired with sarees and lace palazzos as a replacement to the conventional ‘salwar’. Black, white and maroon seemed to be the popular colour of choice in the collection. Heavy detailing on the outfits. Saleable and a Wearable collection. The show began with a ‘mujra’. Theme ‘Adaa’ was aptly conservative and put together well.

The colour palette: Family of pinks and other pastels. The petticoat was replaced with ‘Khadi work’ pyjamis, split-open long embroidered jackets worn with the signature ‘dhoti’, nuances of gota work could be seen while silk blend cotton crinkled skirts, gorgeous potlis and bright coloured dupattas trimmed with ghungroos added drama.

Adarsh Gill

Set against a Parisian background, commenced day three at DCW with her debut, the collection included a blend of Western and Indian styles.

Fabric: silk & chiffon, french laces, brocades and georgettes.

Ensemble: Saris and lehengas on one hand, while fitted gowns, mini dresses, cigarette pants, mini dresses and beaded jackets on the other. Flowing silhouettes, short trails and elaborate drapes were used prominently with shimmer, stones and Swarovski elements. Embroideries & techniques like zardozi & hand knitting,

Colour palette ranged from orange, red, purple, green, pink and beige.

Models (a balance of Indian and international models) accessorised with ethnic jewellery and matching clutches. Hair was tied loosely in a bun giving a slight messy look from behind.

Primarily a contemporary collection, it largely consisted of monotone sarees in georgette and lace, sequinned trailing gowns in net and organza, ornate lehengas, evening dresses, shrugs and trousers and a generous use of sequins and Swarovski elements. Modern take on the traditional lehenga with muted full-sleeved, front clasp, waist long jackets paired with heavy embellished skirts. The colour palette ranged from bold oranges to green, pinks and purple to metallic silver and gold. Details of ruching, tassels and feathers added more interest.

A white stage flanked by magic mushrooms suggestive of an Alice in Wonderland theme. Lights off, psychedelic tune and the show begins. Models entered wearing plastic antlers in ruched lace bodysuits and flouncy gowns made in net with satin inserts. The colour palette remained white and subsequently shifted to powder pinks and blues. Long drapes and sari-like form added an ‘Indian’ element to the gowns. Almost suddenly the colours became brighter and an army of bold reds and orange seized the runway. Remodelling of the form and ‘nip and tuck’ could be seen in the outfits however the embroidery was minimal. Lace (clearly not the best quality at that), net and satin remained the popular fabrics in the collection. Colour palette shifted to golden, nudes, whites, silver and finally citrus yellows and lime greens. Peplum style jackets, fishtail skirts, Jodhpur trousers suggested a merger of tradition and modern. Most of the collection did not seem very saleable. After all, not many people would be comfortable wearing a white ruched net jumpsuit. Although the concepts were laudable, sadly they were not followed through till the end.

Abundance of lace and embellishment. Ranging from draped to fitted silhouettes and flared bottoms, the designer showcased saris, lehengas and theatrical gowns. Transition from ivories to pinks on satins and nets.

Drapes, a lot of experimental embroideries. Indian silhouettes by thinning definitions and notions.
Imaginative, romantic themes inspired by a fantastical world of ethereal fairy inhabitants in lost woods. Also mystical, magical creatures of the deep marine.

If you're wont to hang out in your bedroom, vamping in your underwear and giant sunglasses while bossing your cat around like you're a high-powered fashion editor, you might as well do so wearing Prada's new Minimal-Baroque shades. The new specs have the same curlicue flourish as those shown on the runway in Milan, but the minimal design restricts it to the front or the arms of the frames, not both.

The project, called From Drawings to Pictures, is a partnership between Prada and Vogue Italia to find young Italian photographers to render the glasses in a pop-comical manner. An accompanying exhibition is presented in Prada stores in Milan, New York, Paris, London, Istanbul and Hong Kong. The shades, too, are available only in those cities, so you'll probably want to get your feline assistant to have a pair flown in.

"Haiti is the island of mysticism and painting (Malraux) and it is through painting, that this great country tells its story; its stories. And it is these stories that these clothes narrate and it is this gift that I disseminate and imprint on my fabrics. Making the history of Haiti and the art naif a wearable art, which despite its “naif” denomination has a profound theoretical corpus. It is a cheerful art even when it expresses a drama, that with simple strokes and generous colors, does not allow mystifying intermediaries".

The collection created by designer Stella Jean, "Still a Goddess" presented at Alta Roma Alta Moda in the competition “Who's on Next”, promotes and is an integrating part of the project "Fashion-Able Haiti”[1], organized by the Embassy of Haiti in Italy and part of the program "Fashion for Development".

"Fashionable Haiti", is a partner of the "Fashion for Development", part of the “First Ladies Gala Luncheon” will take place in NYC in a non disclosed location and will not be at the United Nations. FashionAble Haiti is a program that Fashion 4 Development supports.

Her Excellency the Ambassador of Haiti, Ms. Geri Benoit is the creator of "FashionABLE Haiti." The edition of Vogue Italy for the month of July is a special dedication to both the project and its creator. The article, in addition to being focused on the program, highlights the historical part of the Napoleonic invasion and colonization and the subsequent Haitian independence (1804).

The goal of "FashionABLE Haiti" is to boost the economy and the country’s revival through fashion. "We are working on creating Sustainable jobs": The vèvè embroidery and the naif painted on the clothes, as part of the Caribbean artistic tradition, textiles and culture, will be made on Italian fabrics by Haitian painters and embroiderers. The result is a combination of Two Excellencies on the same label: the tailoring of the "Made in Italy" which includes the design, the cutting and the packaging and the Art and Craft of the Haitian "Hand-painted & Hand-embroidered".

The project has two basic purposes:

The first is to help the victims of the earthquake of January 12, 2010, and subsequent epidemics like deadly cholera. Rebuilding and restarting two specialties, such as painting and embroidery, distinctive of the craftsmanship economy and of Haitian 'religion'. Thus offering work and not just charity, safeguarding the dignity of a proud people.

The second reveals the desire to start a collaboration and "constructive" dialogue between Italy & Haiti.

The collection dedicated to Haiti recalls the Essence of Spirituality and the gestures of Voodoo ceremonies that characterize the island. Haiti 1804 First black republic in the world, the first colony of deported slaves that gained independence. A proud people who defeated Napoleon's troops. The red and blue color the victory flag with the words "Liberté ou la Mort."

Red and blue are the recurring colors of this collection where the female deities (mambo), chewing tobacco, wearing striped shirts and big muddy shoes taken from the bosses, finally cross freely the now uncultivated plantations. Lavish jewelery around their necks, involuntary colonial legacy. Emeralds, rubies and diamonds resting on fabrics soaked with sweat and rum.

The Creole culture is the union of two civilizations, the African and the European, which merge creating a third, the Creole. When the constituent elements of one or the other are so ingrained as to prevent merging, they overlap, creating a visceral syncretism, which by its nature evokes a "trompe l'oeil" full of emotions.

The tradition of Italian tailoring and design blends with the ritual art of naif paintings and haitian vèvè[2] embroideries originating from Africa. All of this is spectacular in form and unique in its content.

· Clothes resulting from transcendental trance, on which spotless linens are swallowed up in a chromatic bulimia, in which water, earth, air, fire, follow each other in a dance fever with no apparent sense.

· Drunken Priestesses dressed in ceremonial clothing of large volumes which offset the naiveté of the matronly cuts.

· White robes infringed by sacrificial red, by brown from the dirt beaten like a drum by nervous bare feet, streaked by yellow, the claws of war, the cocks ready to attack in the arena.

Monochrome backgrounds on which you can jag the strong, bright, vibrant and defined creole colors. Without shades, only a full awareness of its overall dramatic tension.

Jan-Jan Van Essche Makes Men's Clothes as Chill-Pilled and Dreadlocked as He Is

I met Jan-Jan Van Essche at his studio-cum-store, the Atelier Solarshop, tucked away in a non-gentrified neighborhood of Antwerp. Chill-pilled and dreadlocked, Jan-Jan was accompanied by his better half, Pietro Celestino, who likens himself to a cheerleader ("Go, Jan-Jan, Go!") "Pietro is the first person who sees my collection," Jan-Jan clarifies, to which Pietro replies, "Yeah, someone who gives him the first objective view," eliciting from Jan-Jan: "What are you saying? You're never objective."

It's a miracle anything gets done, which may explain Jan-Jan's one-collection-per-year maxim. "It's my philosophy and a way of life," he says. "It means I can concentrate on one collection at a time. I would go crazy if I had to design three times a year. Besides, I don't wear different stuff throughout the year. Winter or summer clothes are not so different for me. You just pile on more clothes during the winter and take some off in the summer."

Primarily a line of high-end basics for men, Jan-Jan's clothes also possess a vaguely ethnic, urban nomad, unisex appeal. "In fact," he says, "half of my customers are women and the fit is just as good, where the female body flows." To prove his point, when a woman came in and tried on a shirt, on her it became a loose shirt-dress that, when worn with a luxurious wool leggings, looked fantastic.

Not everyone could be equally inspired by Mali and Madeleine Vionnet, but Jan-Jan isn't like everyone. "I was in Mali and loved the fluidity in the way they wear their clothes. Everything had a perfect place when draped. So I decided not to design in sizes; my pieces are cut to fit. Madeleine Vionnet has also been a huge inspiration for me, especially the early years. I like the way she used ethnic patterns and draping to let the body speak for itself. She did this in a very avant-garde way and I can only imagine how liberating her clothes must have been for women in the 1920s."

After only two collections, there is already a cult following of early adopters who share a penchant for his unaffected, Muji-esque looks (albeit with a more sophisticated price range). "I am quite lucky. I know a lot of my customers. I see them and talk to them. It's growing steadily. It's worth all those long dark years."

Founded in 1830 by John Rich and his brothers, traditional company Woolrich is synonymous with functional and timeless jackets. The symbiosis of tradition and modernity, of long-lasting products and robust materials are the reasons behind the brand's huge success. Woolrich originally designed the Arctic Parka for the workers constructing the pipeline from Alaska to North America in the year 1972. And to this very day the thick down filling still protects from extreme winds, persistent snowstorms and freezing cold temperatures as low as -40° Celsius. During winter, the adjustable hood with coyote fur trim is regularly seen protecting the ruddy faces of urban workers from wind, rain and snow.

The Arctic Parka made from Byrd Cloth is a homage to the reliable functionality of the Woolrich classic – and based on the faithful reproduction of the rediscovered Byrd Cloth material, takes it one step further. In the 1930s Admiral E. Richard Byrd developed the fabric, which, due to the density of its structure alone, is water-repellent and windproof. He had it patented as the first American cotton fabric and it was successfully used during the Byrd Antarctica expedition in the year 1939. While researching for the new collection the Woolrich design team came across the historic fabric and asked an Italian fabric manufacturer to reproduce the matt, robust and breathable material.

Made in Italy to exacting quality standards Woolrich is presenting the Arctic Parka made from Byrd Cloth exclusively for 14 oz. in five clean and vibrant colour variations: Bottle Green, Bright Yellow, Royal Blue, Burnt Orange and Dark Navy. Special extras on the limited edition are the YKK metal zip and a second inside pocket with a press stud fastener and the Byrd Cloth label. Consecutive numbering on the joint Woolrich and 14 oz. label makes every parka a unique collector's item. Thanks to its classic silhouette and the width-adjustable waistband the Arctic Parka fits both ladies and men and is available in sizes XXS-XXL. Pierre Garroudi' flash mob Haute- Couture Fashion Show entitled "Pierre Garroudi is taking over London".

The Fashion Show will be a big-scale event, part of a guerrilla campaign. Twenty models will present Pierre Garroudi’s Red Collection.

The program of the event will also include dancers. The event crew amounts up to 50 members.

Main aim of the event remains to create awareness, attract public attention and to democratize the fashion industry anticipating an immense impact.

The itinerary of the fashion show covers the area of London Bridge about 4:00pm, and then, Charing Cross Station and Trafalgar Square.

"India Sutra, on the magic trail of Indian textiles" is both an illustrated book for art lovers, adventurous aesthetes, as well as a reference book and a tool indeed for textile and decorative arts professionals. Presenting all types of weaves and decorative techniques, it leads the reader from the material and reality towards myth and ritual. Yet it presents the advantages of a practical guidebook. It includes reliable maps, a comprehensive address book, and as such is an excellent repertoire for adventures from outside up to all around India.

A tribute to the skills of Indian craftsmen, the book offers a discovery of textile routes in today’s India. In remote villages, ancestral techniques help create countless varieties of fabrics adorned with symbolic designs, embroidery or by precious vegetable dyes. In this universe where all embellishment techniques continue to exist side by side, beauty itself lies in the heart of the workshops where day after day the canvas of the future is woven with fervour.

Bérénice Ellena has worked as a clothes and costume designer in Paris, Venice, Delhi and Srinagar. Designing costumes for cinema and theatre, she prefered to work for theatre creations and festivals, in Paris and outside. The slow maturing work in collaboration with theatre directors, diving deep into a text, searching the essence of the caracters and therefore the ideal outfit in which the caracters would hide or expose themselves appeared more interesting to her than the imediate fabrication of a costume for a film or even the designing of some prêt à porter ensemble. She had the pleasure to work for memorable creations in the court of Popes’ Palace for Avignon festival
.
During her years in Venice, she collaborated with painters with whom she was friend with, inspiring them with her most original outfits. Modeling intensively for one of them, she kept on creating special looks for him and got more and more intuitive, self teaching herself the keys to symbolism, all the metaphysic of outfits, ornaments and poses. As long with observing how he would capture the light and translate contrasts of colours, light and shade, she would imbibe the geometry of frame. All this would be usefull to her later on, when going around India and taking pictures for her book on textiles, in difficult conditions of light, not having learned photography. The Venitian background would then automaticly guide her, without her even being aware of it.

Since 76, she had been visiting India, between every assignement as a costumes designer, at least one or twice a year. She was fascinated by its colours and fabrics, as well as by the natural elegance of its simplest inhabitants. She was very much attracted as well by khadi, its image of non violence and its quality as sustainability conductor. Having selected, manipulated textiles for many years, she, as most of her fellows costumes and fashion designers in France, had a very poor idea of how all these beautiful traditional textiles were being made and embellished. She was feeling that knowing more, exchanging more with the craftpeople would lead to more understanding and open new niches of creativity, collaboration, away from heavy industrial production.

In 88, she was offered to conduct a development project for production of finely embroieded garments for a french company founded by a french actress friend of hers and designer Michel Klein. Kashmir was to be the location for this romantic project. She was to conduct the whole project, from a house-boat on Dal Lake, picking up her master tailor every morning on the shore, rowing the shikara as Mustak, his tiffin on his lap, would hum a gazal of his composition, praizing his female boss with a genuine sense of humour.

She has taught the history of costume, and has also organised various exhibitions in French museums as designer and curator. Supported by Hermès, she spent some years researching textiles all around India. Her writings and photos originate from her meetings with craftspeople, textile technicians, poets and Indian scholars. Her work depicts a living art endangered by modernity. When meeting late Krishna Ribou, famous and very knowledgeable collector of anciant Indian fabrics in Paris, whose collection was given to Musée Guimet Paris, she would argue with her : Krishna would say that such marvellous fabrics could not be made today, Ellena would say that all the technics are knowned and available today, though time consuming, and that such unique weaves could be made on order, as long as the buyer would agree to pay the fees for the weavers, when it takes nine month to weave a jamewar, or a few months less for a poetic jamdani sari, not more than one would pay for a label product from some Haute Couture house.

Working with the craftsmen in Kashmir, introducing new designs and colour combinations, very succesfully, led her to be persuaded that India was « the spot » where to create new collections, small quantities unique collections. She decided she would make a guide book for people working with textiles in Europe : through this book they would to get to know more about the technics and therefore, the conditions of production, an dit would help them to reach the production villages and experiment with the craftpeople, cooperative societies, women’s development societies, they would be able to design new products adapted to the requirements and ethics of foreign market.

She knew that any fashion or decorative art related visitor in India would be interested in investigating, for knowledge or for business, this hudge field, spread all around India.
Hermès was to be her sponsor for this vast enterprise (adventure). It took her about three years around India, visiting remote villages, taking photographs, interviewing the weavers and dyers. Altogether, with research and editing, seven years.

In the meanwhile, she conducted two kalamkari projects in Andhra and introduced two hudge contemporary kalamkaris in french museums’collection, contradicting Krishna Ribou’statesments on the poor quality of today’s products.

Very concerned by environment, she explored and tried to promote the natural dyes field, gave her contribution to works on this field and had her photographs exhibited in various museums, as Musée des Arts Premiers in Paris.

She is aware that India owns a treasure that she does not sherish enough, and a hudge field of employment and export that still needs to be exploited.

When in Venice, she had curated the italian Haute Couture Alta Moda Italiana collections shootings, matching accessories and choosing the models for each ensemble what Italians would call a stylista work.

For Nice Museum of Asian Arts, she curated an exhibition on Indian women’s image(s) through arts and cinema. From mother goddesses of the Indus valley up to the rebellous heroïnes of today’s and cinema, the exhibition was going through the form/shape, the external and inner aspects, the symbols of fertility…

For the golden Jubilee in Alliance Française Delhi, she wanted to show some of the best know-how France has, ie, haute couture, the way a dress falls, the perfection of a cut along the body, the righness of choice of fabric for a special cut, the perfection of a sleeve and how it is attached to the body of the dress without pulling or grining. To show in fact and ancestral art of cuting and matching. She wanted to show it through the ages, along history, throuth french painting. With the new generation of Indian fashion Designer, the rising of Haute Couture in India, the new skills in cuting here, she wanted in this fashion show to depict the actual landscape of a recently born and very succesful art of dressing women, acording to today’s requirements. THe selection of designers, some very new and talented, some others whose talent had already been confirmed was to show the variety and vitality of Indian fashion design, its creativity that makes it deserve to figure in the courts of the great. Some of the yound designers like Ekta Kaul, Koga and Mayank Kaul will probably do, they have all the capacity. It was a thrilling experience to have them all on the ramp, to organise this show with a very restricted amount iof money, with Alliance studients instead of professionals, to give it a more risky, daring, intellectual and artistic touch, hosting it in this very modern and minimalist architecture of the Alliance Française building, to respect the architecture in not overdoing the show decoration, all of it a great thrill. And all these designers were darlings. The response also has been overwhelming.

This New Collection is reinvented in his signature style with a new inspiration of royalty. This theme of royal stature and power can be seen through the manipulated fabric that creates a creative texture like the Roman Emperors and the Elizabethan Royalty.

LFW Pierre Garroudi AW11

The AW11 Pierre Garroudi collection was showcased at his remarkable, characteristic design gallery at the Arches near London Bridge during London Fashion Week, February 2011. Set beneath the ground shaking train tracks on Crucifix Lane, the arch-shaped, charismatic gallery has a captivatingly rustic essence. The cold air, damp smell, crumbling brick walls with peeling white paint and white corrugated metal give this place a real back street, exclusive, urban feel. A block white catwalk protruded down the centre of the gallery, its clean, smooth lines a real contrast to the workably inelegant surroundings. Internationally acclaimed DJ Markus beat his renowned, funky house music around the room as tiny little cupcakes with cute purple swirls of icing were served to the ever growing audience of uber-cool, super sophisticated and fabulous fashionistas. The entire Garroudi experience had the vibe of an exclusive VIP underground party where only the young, rich and beautiful get in.

The cool kids on the front row of the much-awaited AW11 fashion show were dressed to the nines, in not much lesser inched heels, tiny mini dresses and fur shrugs. Just looking at these beautiful, skinny people enduring the cold in the name of all that’s fabulous made you feel all in all rather nippy, and let’s just say the show itself wasn’t much different. The barely there garments left little to the imagination and hung off the skinny curves of the models – quite literally, with not one but two models flashing their own nippy bits to the crowd.

The Pierre Garroudi show itself could only be described as a work of art, a spectacular visual masterpiece. The haute couture designer’s signature choice of a solo colour palette was prevalent once again, this season it was an array of purple shades from lilac to bright and deep tones. The fashion designer’s signature choice of avant-garde models were styled with tall, purple, 18th century inspired wigs that had been dishevelled, with some scraped up into fantastic castle shapes and oldy-worldy style crosses. Others adorned extravagant head pieces made from the same manipulated fabrics as the garments. Modestly natural make-up was vamped up with a flash of bright lilac eye shadow and garments were teamed with sky-scraping, metallic purple mules and knee-high boots that were wrapped and decorated with charming little grape vines.

Models worked it on the runway, each with their own distinctive character. Pausing at least 3 to 4 times, they moved their arms and twisted their bodies in an alien-like manner, gazing into space as in some form of trance or eerie dream world.

Pierre Garroudi’s collection commenced with dresses that were folded and weaved into giant, crochet-like patterns that created volume away from the body with large holes revealing bare skin beneath creating a sexy, no boundaries look. Others were folded tucks that cascaded down, with some creating expertly fathomed circular shapes. Purple and lilac knits were manipulated into volumous shapes with sexy, revealing cuts. Lilac gingham prints added a light and playful touch to the jaw dropping, sexy, backless dresses that skimmed the models’ sides in an ever so seductive manner. The final look of the daring AW11 collection came in an abundance of the most beautiful shade of purple chiffon that was tightly ruffled and folded forming the most spectacular, unexpected shapes with glorious volume and structure. Gasps of awe waved through the air as these final, aesthetically pleasing masterpieces blessed the runway for a brief moment.

For now one can only dream about and wait ever so impatiently for Pierre Garroudi’s next, highly anticipated fashion collection which, following his past 12 collections showcased during London Fashion Week will be indisputably innovative and awe-inspiring.

These have been inspired from Pria’s sojourns at Royal Palaces in Rajasthan!

We’re all familiar by now with the age-old wisdom that compassion and caring are key parts of the art of living. Similarly, the cuisine of any culture is often seen as art influencing and sustaining life. And fashion can quite fairly be described as a living art, giving elegance and grace to the everyday business of living, working and loving.

A new initiative in Geneva, Switzerland, last week combined all of these elements in what can only be called The Art Of Giving.

The Mandarin Oriental Hotel, under the guidance of Princess Francoise Sturdza, president of The Heart For India Foundation, hosted a series of stunning events that offered lucky guests the tastes of Indian cuisine and the sights of resplendent Indian fashion in a unique fundraising gala.Bombay based beautiful designer Pria Kataaria Puri, whose gorgeous, diaphanous gowns, robes ,kaftans, saris and dresses grace an extensive client list from newyork,paris,millan,Kuwait,dubai to Mumbai brought the textures and colours of India to the warm oak-lined ballroom and plush carpets of the Mandarin Oriental.

Geneva’s winter frosted the windows with a breath of snow, but inside there was the lavish splendour of Rajput palaces, and the romance of desert caravans.

For three nights, "The Glamour of Bollywood" combined with the ancient sensual beauty of Indian tradition in a series of Pria Kataaria Puri fashion events at the Mandarin Oriental.The first event, named the Rajputana Rhapsody, captured the glorious, bejewelled radiance of the robes and dresses of the Rajput Princesses of Northern India.

The second event, named the Arabian Nights Caravan, took excited guests on a journey through the rich textures, fine embroideries and dazzling gold and silver trim on sleeves and hems that define the mysterious allure of the desert.

The third night, called the Jeans & Glam Jam, hurled the guests into the brilliant, vivacious sophistication of modern Bombay life and society: vibrant, feisty, elegant and free-spirited.

All of the garments presented in the three events were designed exclusively by Pria Kataaria Puri who is also the new Ambasodor for Heart for India foundation,. The European models from Milan were specially selected for the event by Princess Francoise and Pria, and showed that the unique, ravishing designs created by this Indian artist are truly universal in their appeal.

The delicacies of Indian cuisine were created and offered by the Mandarin Oriental’s dedicated restaurant, Rasoi by Vineet, recognized and rewarded with a glittering Star in the Michelin Guide. Opened in June 2008 after a multi-million Swiss Franc renovation of the hotel’s public areas,Rasoi by Vineet offers the cuisine of London-based Michelin starred chef, Vineet Bhatia, who specialises in deliciously spectacular “evolved” Indian food.

The restaurant’s award winning Head Chef, Anupam Bannerjee, has more than 15 years of culinary experience in some of the world’s top kitchens. Before joining Rasoi by Vineet in Geneva, Chef Anupam spent time in London’s sister restaurant Rasoi, working closely with Vineet to immerse himself fully in Maestro Bhatia’s distinctive “evolved Indian cuisine”. The traditional and modern Indian dishes prepared by Chef Anupam Banerjee added an extra dimension to the series of special fashion events. Nothing gives a sense of place more immediacy than the smells and tastes that are unique to it.

To complement the journeys of the three nights, Chef Anupam selected some of his favourite Indian dishes from the whole spectrum of Indian cuisine, and created several signature dishes exclusively for the guests.

Although the events in themselves offered spectacular sights of beauty and creative design, a selection of the finest Indian foods, and an ambience dedicated to enhance the entire journey of the senses, the purpose driving the initiative was to raise money for children in need.

The Indian children supported by The Heart For India Foundation include abandoned girls, who reside at the girls’ orphanages called Girls Town One and Girls Town Two, and the thousands of children in the model school at Nanmangalam, South India.

To that end, the events were so successful, and the sums raised were so impressive, that the initiative is already being planned for a return to beautiful Geneva city, next year.
