Poonam Bhagat - Taika - WLIFW S/S 2007-08 'Sep

TAIKA by Poonam Bhagat
Take a sprig of twine , a spool of yarn and a leaf of natural fibre – throw it all in a bubbling clauldron of burnt earthen hues and stir with passion , add a glitter of burnished gold and a shimmer of antique silver , let the moonbeams dance along the wooden spatula while you stir and watch TAIKA emerge .

TAIKA , a Finnish word for “magic” , has , for over 16 years cast its own spell on women using pure natural fabrics by taking on myriad shapes to flatter and enhance the female form .
Tonal or stark but minimal embroideries , intricate surface texturing , quilting and appliqué with emphasis on styling and detailing is essential. A smattering of matt sequins is used for highlighting the garment when necessary. A nice vintage look is created for formals and a hip retro look for casuals.

Empire line dresses , sheath dresses , tunics with wide band collars , kaftan dresses and jackets in eggplant , burgundy and black handwoven tussar silks vie with each other for attention .
A range of jackets in contrasting vibrant silks , quilted and appliquéd , titillate and tease along side the more conservative and classic Churidar-kurtas and the quintessential Indian ensemble , the Sari.

Black and burgundy chanderi silks flirt with ivory peek- a – boo abstract motifs in dresses , tunics and skirts in the ‘Cherries on Coal’ collection.

Silks in rich emerald and turquoise hues balloon and gather in high waisted dresses and skirts with tonal polkas and swirls or jewel like dull pewter and bronze embroideries reinvent themselves in the “jewel Silk and Aquamarine silk” collections.

Ivory matka silks with black thread embroidery tell a “fishy” tale complemented with ochre and lavender. Black flirts with ivory and olive matka silks to tell its own fish and foul stories along with nature in the “Pearls on Coal” collection , boasting of knee length skirts, empire line and kaftan dresses and tunics .

Georgettes tie-dyed in earthy colors of rusts , burgundies , olives and browns , limes and forest greens with the quintessential black , printed and embroidered with tribal motifs inspired from the Mola tribes of Panama translate into sarees and dresses which sing an ode to femininity.
Bronze, copper and pewter tissue appliqués on chanderis form a lattice like pattern on elegant Churidar-Kurtas with crinkled silk stoles.

Ash linen trench coats , jackets , sheath dresses and pencil skirts are evocative of the “Retro” look with black geometric circular and striped motifs –embroidered and patched .
Soft georgette tunics in slate-pink , wedgewood blue , sage , ash and brown sparkle ,shine and shimmer iridescently with delicate borders of dull gold and pewter sequins scattered like “Stardust” .

And so TAIKA works its magic on discerning buyers as we sell from
various upmarket designer stores in Chennai , Kolkatta , Bangalore , Hyderabad , Mumbai and Delhi besides making forays into stores in West Palm Beach , Florida , Manhattan and Tokyo.

Aparna & Norden Wangdi’s “Back to Neverneverland “ Spring – Summer Collection 2008

Aparna & Norden Wangdi’s “Back to Neverneverland “
Spring – Summer Collection 2008

At The Chakraas, Samrat Hotel- 12 noon onwards, August 18, 2007
On August 18th 2007, Aparna & Norden Wangdi will showcase their latest collection “Back to Neverneverland” at The Chakraas, Samrat Hotel. Creating magic with their designs, Aparna & Norden Wangdi’s new collection Inspired by the omnipresent rag doll, the stuffed creature with the silly grin and wool for hair, the collection is a magical journey through childhood with its boogeymen and angels. With the ease of the infancy and the maturity of the adolescence, the collection is the utmost epitome of creativity.

ABOUT THE COLLECTION
Nostalgia is the keyword of the collection which will transport you to the best and the most memorable phase of your life. Drawing inspiration from the omnipresent rag doll, the stuffed creature with the silly grin and wool for hair, the collection is a magical journey through childhood with its cackles and cries. It is about that time in the life when your will was reason enough for you to do what you wished with no thought of what you should or should not do.
Colour defines the temperament of attire, hence the right colour is essential to bring out the feel of the outfit and in turn the entire collection. Keeping this dictum in mind, the designer duo has designed their range comprising of bright, dazzling upbeat colours of the likes of reds, pinks, oranges, sunny yellows, greens, splattered with blacks, whites and browns to infuse the collection with vibrancy.

With the playful silhouettes of short dresses, loose tops, trousers, skirts and overskirts, the collection runs amok in its vibrant colors. Layering, frills, buttons and laces are details which run through the collection in its clothes, bags and shoes. Patchworks of rag dolls with the vacant smiles on their faces, hand embroideries, smocking, hand quilting and gathering all intensify the free spirit of the age where the rag doll was your best friend.

ABOUT THE DESIGNERS

Both Aparna and Norden share a common background in the renowned NIFT, New Delhi, where they honed their early skills. After graduation it wasn’t long before they realized their dream of setting up a design studio of their very own.

Freefalling came into being in 1999, marking the culmination of their joint sojourn across a multitude of fields. The duo undertook contrasting routes in their quest to gather expertise and knowledge. Norden chose to head overseas for a first hand experience in the USA, acquainting himself in the areas of manufacturing, exports, fabrics, dyeing, printing and merchandising. Aparna, on the other hand, set about refining her skills in design in theatre, product and interiors, which proved invaluable in defining the standards of their eventual label.

The powerhouse of talent that Aparna and Norden represent is not restricted to the confines of the fashion industry. They have also extended their design expertise to a number of resorts, restaurants and stores. A noteworthy foray has been in theatre for costume design in the Indo-French opera production, The Fakir of Benaras, with a cast of hundreds.

In summing up their numerous achievements, it can be said that Norden’s flair for coordination and administration perfectly complements Aparna’s artistry and vision. The stupendous success of Freefalling stands testimony to their combined ability to inspire awe and admiration.

BBB Bread & Butter Barcelona 4-6 July 2007

The “tradeshow for selected brands” welcomed more than 91.000 trade visitors from all over the world in the Catalan capital.Full house! BREAD & butter defied all laws of expectancy with the BBBarcelona July 2007 and, despite the usual summer slowdown, was able to increase impressively: in comparison to July 2006, 50% more international trade visitors came to the “tradeshow for selected brands” held in the Catalan capital, and even in comparison to this years’ winter event in January, BBBarcelona was able to report a 10% visitor increase!Everywhere you looked, only pleased faces: the large visitor crowd in no way affected the situation at the entrances – everything remained relaxed. Karl-Heinz Müller: “To invest in the ACTIVE GUEST MANAGEMENT was one of the best ideas we had. Our guests were able to gain access to the grounds easily and quickly, and, as a result, use their time efficiently.” Only shortly after the event was opened, the exhibitors enjoyed a tremendously high visitor frequency at their stands.Concentrating on Barcelona as the single B&b tradeshow venue in Europe proved a good move for all sides: more visitors came from the various countries, and also the general internationality (of the event) was higher than in Winter 2007. In addition to the Spanish visitors, the BBBarcelona recorded 65% international visitorsfrom 99 nations.

The number of German visitors is especially noteworthy: almost 10% of the guests came from Germany, which, in comparison to July 2006 indicates an increase of 68%. In general, noticeably more visitors from non-European countries came: such as, for instance, 50% more Russian visitors. Japan, too, showed considerable growth. Also the presence of the international press is worth mentioning: BBBarcelona was host to more than 3000 media representatives from all over the world.

The tradeshow had much to offer: shows by Custo, Ed Hardy, Freesoul, G-Star, Pepe and the graduates of the Escuela Superior de Moda y DisenÐo Felicidad Duce in Barcelona, special events by, for example, Havaianas, Marc Ecko, Timezone and Wrangler as well as the exhibition of the “7th letter crew”. The STUDIO.V set new quality standards with its new designers, more than 40 international collections and a monumental show. The Boss company also came to Barcelona and presented the Boss Orange line to the international audience on Friday evening at the Torero arena „Plaza de toros Monumental de Barcelona”. To top it all off, BREAD & butter hosted the Closing Party at “La Caseta” – here, the B&b crew and their guests celebrated three successful tradeshow days at the beautiful outdoor location with its magnificent view over the harbor of Barcelona.

For the next BBBarcelona which will take place from January 16 – 18, 2008, B&b plans to expand considerably: the January event will include the halls 6 and 7, the Mies van der Rohe Pavillon and the Palao Nacional as well as the entire outdoor area above the existing grounds. Karl-Heinz Müller: “We can imagine providing the STUDIO and the BB.DESIGN with an adequate home by locating both in the graceful Palao Nacional. We would like to use the Mies van der Rohe Pavillon – in my opinion the most beautiful building in the world – for exhibitions which would fit the tone set of this beautiful edifice or for the launch of a high-quality brand. For the outside premises we can envision grand displays or installations. Besides, more and more brands are interested in also presenting themselves outside the halls – through the expansion of the grounds we are able to meet their needs.”

Moreover, BREAD & butter will launch BREAD & BUTTER SOURCING in January 2008. Karl-Heinz Müller: “BBBarcelona is the largest and most important European tradeshow for denim, urban wear and sportswear. Both in January and in July, the entire industry meets in Barcelona and uses the tradeshow as a communication platform. Also, textile producers and other closely-related sectors come to Barcelona to establish the first contact and consultations with their partners. And so it is only consequent to integrate the precursory elements into the BBBarcelona. Even now, this July, the established Denim Mill “Ortanadolu” from Turkey as well as the “Interwashing Group” from Italy were present as exhibitors. A second time participator was the renowned Laundry Martelli in the Hotel Fira Palace not far from the fairgrounds. All were well-pleased with the response.

Karl-Heinz Müller continues: “Our intent was well-received by the representatives of the relevant areas. BREAD & BUTTER SOURCING will take place in hall 6, above the known grounds. Here, we envision textiles, ingredients, laundries, finishing, as well as all relevant preliminary sectors.” According to the B&b strategy, the firms will be carefully selected inernationally. K.-H. Müller: “We focus on the best in each sector and can foresee approximately 100 exhibitors. We will be able, for instance, to consider a maximum of 8-10 established Denim fabricants. Basically, it is important to us that the companies appreciate and respect each other.”

Karl-Heinz Müller further: “The existing grounds are bursting at the seams. To efficiently facilitate all existing potential, we simply need more space and place. The potential in the high-value sportswear sector is far from being exhausted. Expanding the grounds offers great possibilities, which we intend to utilize without loosing sight of quality – quantitative growth was never our interest.”

You have good reason to look forward to 2008, when the “tradeshow for selected brands”, from January 16 – 18, summons you once again to the Catalan capital. Karl-Heinz Müller concludes: “The BBBarcelona is a MUST for all professionals of the sector, and not merely in order to see the upcoming collections – BBBarcelona is a “Fashion Festival”, where lifestyle and trends are made to come alive – and so offers an inexhaustible source of inspiration.” July 2007

Rome Fashion Week

Neeta Lulla and Pria Kataria Puri showcased their autumn winter collection at Rome Fashion Week

July 9-13, 2007

Noted designers, Neeta Lulla and Pria K Puri have been invited to showcase their Autumn-winter collection at the Rome fashion week this July. The designers have been selected after LFW Advisory Board’s decision by Alta Roma, the institution that promotes Rome’s culture on the international fashion scene.

Obviously, such a selection wouldn’t have been figured if these designers hadn’t been well received with their work at the LFW Autumn-winter 2007. Says Pria K Puri, designer and winner of Bharat Yuv Ratna and Bharat Vikas awards for designing women’s wear, “My business has tripled since LFW. I had orders from various Indian and five international buyers – two of them from Middle east; I have also started retailing at stores like Amara, Aza and Kimaya. And I’m in talks with an agent in Paris!” While Pria can’t stop gushing about her achievements, Neeta is much sober in her acceptance. She says, “It felt really good that my collection was very received and the response was brilliant. With just my first fashion week ever, being invited to showcase in Rome is quite a high!”

So, what are their collections going to be about? Both designers will be presenting their LFW collections but with a little more winter-appropriate wear. “For Indian audiences, with Turkish Delights, I concentrated more on autumn, than on winter. Though I’ll be taking a few outfits from my LFW collection, I’ll be adding a few more outfits that will befit the winter expectations in Europe,” says Pria. Neeta seconds this, “My collection will be an extension of the LFW Female infanticide collection. Since the concept was well received and of course, it is really close to my heart, I want to take it forward to Rome. I’ll be adding a few outfits to the collection.”

While this isn’t the first time that Indian designers are going to Rome, this is definitely going to be one thing to look out for.

Neeta Lulla and Pria Kataria Puri showcased their autumn winter collection at Rome Fashion Week scheduled from July 9-13, 2007 in Rome. The designers are selected based on the decision made by the Lakme Fashion Week [LFW] Advisory Board, enabling Lakme Fashion Week to integrate India into the global fashion world.

Pria Kataria Puri will be showcasing an extension of her LFW collection. "At LFW, I showcased more of fall, and less winter. There were light fabrics and no woolens or velvets. In Rome, the concentration would be on winter wear. There will be a lot of cocktail dresses, jackets and coats as winter in Europe is synonymous with Christmas and New Year festivities. I used some interesting prints in my 'Turkish Delight' collection at LFW; I plan to carry that forward into this collection with some new styling elements," she reveals. "My expectations from Rome Fashion Week are business and exposure. I do not know if it will generate immediate business or take its time but the collection would create an awareness of our product."

Neeta Lulla plans to showcase her fall winter collection in Rome. Playing with prints from Rajasthan and Punjab, color flirts with cut and design. The garments bear an Indian influence aesthetically proven with the fabrics etched in carvings [cutwork, quilting, colors and embroidery] while the silhouettes give it a global appeal. "It is a good platform to be seen at various fashion weeks, especially on international shores. LFW plays a pivotal role in taking Indian designers to international markets; indeed a commendable effort", she enthuses.

Announcing their participation, Anil Chopra, VP Lakme Lever said, "The global cross-over with LFW and Alta Roma is an initiative towards providing an attractive platform for designers. As part of this initiative, Italian designer Giovanni Cavagna showcased his winter collection at LFW last season." According to Consuelo Aranyi, Alta Roma, "Alta Roma plays an important role in promoting the "Made in Italy" brand world over. With this exchange program, Italy and India will witness an excellent exchange of talent and creativity."

LFW witnessed the first of its exchange program with Prêt a Porter, where as part of this fashionable business association, designers from Parisian fashion house Leonard Paris and French designer Nathalie Garcon showcased on the runways of LFW Spring Summer 2007. As a part of this exchange program, Narendra Kumar Ahmed and Wendell Rodricks will present on the runways of PAPP in September 2007.

DESIGNS
In the process of design we have to provide answers for a rather pressing concern – how to create contemporary forms of expression that reinforce rather than destroy links with the past – to preserve the traditional idiom and maintain its relevance with a fresh design aesthetic. To enhance, integrate and strengthen traditional textiles with the contemporary design keeping the aesthetics of the traditional fabric of Bhagalpur and bandhini of Bhuj. The main focus is on value addition and augmenting the demand of handloom products and bandhini. Also this collection represents the responsibility to save our Indian Textile Heritage along with giving employment to the craft persons and weavers of our country.

PRODUCT INNOVATION
Value addition in the fabric as required for functionality, in terms of surface embellishments or printing. Suitable designs in fabric and garment, keeping the clients in mind.
The vision of this project is to promote hand looms in domestic and international markets where the machines are threats, in terms of efficiency, capacity and Quality.
For the bandhini garments the craft used was elasticity of the garment so that one size could fit different sizes.

QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT
Emphasis has been put on durability of every product. High quality of finishing and lasting color dyes, plus weaves that make the fabric stronger. The silk has been woven in such a way that it can be used in summer. The tactile feel is luxurious. Color combinations are sophisticated and elegant.

THE CUTS
The whole collection is based on the user demand. The silhouettes are basic, but the emphasis has been given on the method of construction through use of unconventional techniques. The garments are dresses, evening gowns, tunics etc.

We have tried to engineer the garment by eliminating the darts from the garment and made it in a way that can fit to various sizes. The garments designed are for the Spring Summer, 07’. Basically we have used dresses that are comfortable and fit well with the aesthetic value.

SMIRNOFF BLACK EXPRESSIONS BY ARJUN KHANNA, DELHI

Smirnoff Black Couture Pour Homme by Arjun Khanna

The Character
- Smiroff Black, Born in a copper pot-still that is over a hundred years old, Smirnoff Black is a unique vodka with unique character. It harkens back to the time of the Czars, when all vodka was created in small batches. Smirnoff Black No. 55 is a tribute by Smirnoff to the traditional copper-pot distillation so enjoyed by Russia's aristocracy and Tzars, yet combining with modern methods of production.

Arjun Khanna's Smirnoff Black Couture Pour Homme captures the essence of Russian passion through a blockbuster all-male collection held at The Grand on Thursday evening 19 April, design and fabric being the highlights. Smirnoff Black No. 55, using the Russian tradition of small batch, copper pot distillation to create vodka with a distinct character. This high end luxury couture evolves from Smirnoff Black's partnership with veteran Menswear Designer Arjun Khanna to give expression to the Smirnoff Black brand and reflect its Russian passion.
Arjun Khanna's unabashed liking for men. As a market. Arjun is one of the few designers in India who actually make clothes for the male population. Since census statistics claim that there are more of us in this country than there are women, you'd thing there'd be more choice for us. Hell, no. For every men's wear collection at Fashion Week, there are fifteen for the female form. At Arjun's show, there are a few women on the ramp, but they are incidental. It's the men in jackets and boots who call the shots. Well, almost.

Collection - The Collection is inspired by Russia's Cossack and Siberian looks. The detailing, embellishments and trimming reflect the Russian theme. Since there's a Russian theme to the evening, it's a troupe of Cossack dancers in their jackboots who have the crowd clapping. Evening's sponsored by Smirnoff Black, giving a twist to the term Black Russian.

With his new Menswear Collection, Arjun managed to bring a similar sense of irresistibility back home to the runway. "Smirnoff Black Couture Pour Homme," the title of his latest collection, suggested a dialogue between Smirnoff Black vodka and Russia's Cossack-Siberian heritage. Silhouettes. Narrow trousers, sherwanis and bandhgalas had his signature flair. The infusion of evening details—fine crushed velvets, wools, silks, and leather texturized with suede cutwork and embroidery.

Rajneesh Duggal wearing midnight black bandhgala with a tasseled embroidered shawl had opulent connotations. Post-Dinner : heightened with DJ Pearl .On Serve were: Russian Passion and Siberian Frost. Talking about Smirnoff Black's association with Arjun Khanna, Asif Adil, Managing Director, Diageo India, said, "Smirnoff Black has been crafted to offer an original taste experience that can be enjoyed neat, frozen or in cocktails. Similarly, the overall styling and surface treatment of the Smirnoff Black Pour Homme collection are reminiscent of Cossack glory while superb tailoring and bold cuts brings one back to modern styling."
The overall styling and surface treatment of the collection are reminiscent of the Cossack glory while superb tailoring and bold cuts bring one back to modern day trends.

Taking the garments into another level of sublime yet avant-garde, there is an element of bold fun in the design that runs through the entire line. Arjun delivers a winning collection once again with unconventional twists given to timeless silhouettes. Variations on interestingly cut trousers complete the look of flamboyance for the man who has a passion for classic yet "new age" fashion!

Arjun Khanna's forte has always been impeccable, high end tailored looks for luxury couture garments.
Crushed velvets, wools, silks, leather, and suede cutwork, Arjun's models intend to set out on a Russian Odyssey. Expect luxury couture garments in his signature style comes forth in the varied silhouettes. i.e. the trademark "Arjun Khanna Bundgala", single and double breasted jackets, suits, sherwanis, and flamboyant trousers. Arjun's powers of translation transform even the cheesiest souvenirs into covetable pieces; there will be nothing folksy about the detailing, embellishments and trimming, heightened by the play with 'black' , black aubergine, black blue, black teal, with the linings in 'shot black'.

Like his last superhit collection "The New Indian Maharaja", Arjun has successfully brought together the domain of creativity and formal attire design by merging them into new dynamic styles to once again present new fashion statements and versatile style attitudes for men.

In keeping with his signature looks, the collection has a structured, tailored look but with a touch of cool funk where the realm of passion and skill for design intersect. The accent on Black makes a bold new statement this season.
According to Arjun Khanna, "Today men are more adventurous with their wardrobe and dress with remarkable intelligence and awareness. Fashion and comfort are emphasized not only at the physical level but also in the emotional acceptance of good looks and taste, reflecting a feeling of self confidence."

Diageo India launched Smirnoff Black No 55 vodka in the Indian market on February 3 this year, giving it a brand in the super-premium segment of the white spirits market. Smirnoff Black is imported from Russia, as it is one of the few premium vodkas to be made and bottled in Russia using traditional methods. For the launch, Diageo has roped in fashion designer Arjun Khanna, who launches a luxury couture collection using rich fabrics, wool, fur and velvet. The brand will be first introduced in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, followed by Uttar Pradesh. Asif Adil, MD, Diageo said, "With Smirnoff Black, we are launching an authentic Russian brand using fashion as a platform and Captain Morgan will help revolutionise the Indian rum market." Smirnoff Black is being positioned as the super-premium vodka (priced at Rs 1,450 for a 70 cl bottle) and in India will compete with Moet Henessey's Belvedere and V&S's Absolut. Diageo has an array of activities lined up to promote the product and intends to do shows with Khanna in Hyderabad, Delhi, Lucknow and Amritsar apart from Mumbai.

Diageo launched a stylish new bottle for Smirnoff Black No. 55 vodka; the premium vodka from the Smirnoff portfolio, which is made using a centuries-old method of copper pot distillation*.
As a result of the authentic copper pot distillation used to make Smirnoff Black, the vodka has a distinctive mellow character with a lasting, rounded smoothness and is often enjoyed neat or frozen in martinis. Due to the intensity of its character, it is also well suited to shorter cocktails.

Fashion Evening titled "Sumptuous Streets" on Friday-13th April 07 at Pegs N Pints, Forte Grand, New Delhi
Pegs N Pints - the split-level bar in Chanakya Puri - was all set to host the fashion and fun filled evening which had three sequences with three different themes Where the fashion runway met the dance floor as club goers dance to high-energy music and watched city models strut the latest look and style
We were happy to be a part of the Show and Fun. As Media Publicist's we were invited at the Show. Much pleased with the whole idea of Show and Drinks at a PNP. I gathered my video and camera and rolled down to the venue where consumed lot of drinks, Since (The drinks and food were on the house.) and danced the floor of with one of my buddies. Next to me was Rohit Bal in his full mood swing dancing and sharing much talks with everyone on the floor.
Intimate talks and Professional discussions, with eyes wandering everywhere Good for everyone I guess.
This Show was held by young NIFT Fashion student Designer's Rashmi and Mayank. at Pegs and Pints, as the couturier styled their look for the paparazzi and gave them invaluable advice.
Seen at the Event were Rohit Bal and Nikhil Khanna ,City models Nazneen and Vikram Sahaiwere. Couturier Rohit Bal was present to judge the show and award the most creative acts.

After a Belly dancing act by Meher Malik, the Runaway show kicked off; There was everyone on the dance floor holding on to their drinks, shaking their booty on the music spun by DJ Vaibhav. While designers presented their showcase collection.

"This should make the pub more fashion-friendly"- with cool music and lighting effects, Pegs N Pints sure has a great deal to offer to the fashion community!

Our Belly Dancer Meher Malik, who is presently learning salsa at the Salsa India Dance Company (SIDC), also teaches belly dancing . Says Meher, "People have a lot of pre-conceived notions about this dance, that they need to get rid of. There are women, who come to me wanting to learn this art form simply to impress their hubbies with some 'enticing' moves," says she. This exotic dance not only makes you feel confidant but also ultra-feminine, adds Meher. Unlike other dance forms where you need to have a partner, the fluidity of this sensual dance, gives you the freedom to do your own thing.

Paparazzi mingled with guests. City's party pack perched on their heels to get a glimpse of funky apparel, leggy models and the requisite ogling dudes. The bare-chested male models in shorts and linen trousers elicited wolf whistles while miniskirt-clad babes sent the men into overdrive! & Not to Miss the Belly Dancer. Ooh la la. (Awesome Dance)
