Beyond the Cold by Rajdeep Ranawat - A/W 2014

The Fall Winter 2014 collection by Rajdeep Ranawat inspires from cold forests where myths are born and legends are created. Where civilizations have thrived and then withered away into oblivion. It captures the possibility of the blurred lines between imagination and reality.

By generating diverse digital and embroidered pieces the collection tells innovative stories and deliver powerful ideas of fortress once beautified by the wild imagination of human talent and creativity and their eventual downfall to the wilderness. Creating garments in classic free flowing silhouettes Rajdeep Ranawat tries to graphically capture a sense of degenerating mosaics and lost handcrafted artifact; crumbling architectural structures over run by the forest, of treasures lost and parchments dissipated.

Using pure fabrics like silk crepe, silk georgettes, organza and chandheri, the collection reflects its inspiration through its fabric treatment.

The colour story of the garments strives to create the winter mood for the collection. Seeking a dialogue with harmony between the embroidered and the digital, between the professionalism in his design and the familiarity in the treatment given, between the variety of styles and uniqueness of identities; Beyond the Cold is based in the variety and versatility of Rajdeep Ranawat's resources and skills, the spontaneity of ideas and the heterogeneity of our Indian craftsmen, knowing that every garment is unique and singular.

BHINNA SHADJA by Vaishali Shadangule - Wills Lifestyle Fashion Week A/W 2014

BHINNA SHADJA

Raag Bhinna Shadja of Hindustaani Classical music, charms me with the play of listener’s perception in its variable root notes –shadja (sa) and madhyam (ma). Perception, perhaps, is a truth born through a belief.

Our associations, references, memory and contexts rule our perception most of the time. When things are changing rapidly or slowly, it is difficult to identify their beginning or the end. My collection is a testimony of that.

Through my various collections, there is an inherent desire to push my creative limits and dabble with something new yet this time, a previously done collection kept tugging at me to revisit and explore it further. When I did succumb to it, I was amazed to find that the work I had done a while back, presented itself in a fresh, unexplored form. It was as if the work I had done before was a prologue and the book was just starting. I discovered the deep joy of discovering myself again in the same body of work.

This time around, I’m deepening my exploration on the myriad possibilities of these weaves and working with woven silk and khadi again. The fresh possibilities of these weaves always challenge and surprise me.

The collection grows through an inter play between the beginning and end. The end of the garment sometimes gives an illusion of the beginning of it. Similarly, the silhouettes are a mix of construction and drapes. It’s an attempt to experiment with the conventional way of looking at the garment. The woven motives of wool, textured embroidery of cord and evenly tied beads in the cloth are the tunnels to carry the warmth of a personal touch.

The story captures the mood of the collection through white, grey, black off white and gold.

Despite going well with the overall story of the collection, every garment hints at a possibility of its own personal story.

PROFILE
An artist's work almost always is a journey into his personal universe where his deep reflection gets manifested in his creations. In the case of Vaishali Shadangule, this phenomenon takes on a new, deeper dimension.

Her journey started with breaking out of the society prescribed life to pursue her artistic leanings. Those leanings got concretized and took the shape of obnoxiously literal garments crafted from gossamer like loom-woven textiles. Over the years Vaishali has brought an ease into the slightly stiff DNA of a woven sari with her spirit of innovation and morphed the yardage into myriad, easy to wear, forms.

An avid explorer whose ears are trained to follow the faint yet compelling 'clack-clack' of the distant looms that promise variegated palette and texture, Vaishali, donning the mantle of an intrepid explorer, travels there with gusto. If the Madhya Pradesh looms offer her the Chanderi, then the women ruled ones from Assam give her the Mekhalachadder, vibrant Khand and Paithini come from Maharashtra and the delicate Jamdani and Khadi are yielded by Bengal.

The journey of the label Vaishai S began in 2007 and within few years acquired a daunting identity. Vaishali brews a heady concoction where glamorous, modern silhouette is stirred with honest loom fabric and sprinkled with the fragrance of soil from a distant village.

Prada's Harlem Renaissance

In 2009, for a new project called The Iconoclasts, Miuccia Prada asked four fashion editors — including Katie Grand and Carine Roitfeld, then at the helm of French Vogue — to 'rethink' Prada stores in New York, London, Milan, and Paris. Five years later, the concept will begin anew when, on the night of Prada's fall collection (February 20) during Milan Fashion Week, W magazine fashion director Edward Enninful recasts two Prada stores — women’s and men’s on Monte Napoleone — based on the cultural, literary, and stylistic triumph that was the Harlem Renaissance. Surely there are racial connotations at work here.

Overlapping with the Roaring Twenties and the Jazz Age, the Harlem Renaissance saw a creative explosion among the African-American community of Harlem in New York City. The waves started there reverberated around the world and launched the careers of, among many artists, musical greats Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Josephine Baker, who performed in all-inclusive cabarets like the Cotton Club.

Enninful’s vision, an imagined 1920s nightclub, incorporates a cast of black and white mannequins dressed in Prada spring 2014 and archive pieces, posing against a glittering art-deco bar. Similarly, a diorama at the men’s store will showcase black and white mannequins sitting around game tables, also dressed in Prada spring 2014 and archive pieces. The images above, not part of the spring ad campaign, have been newly shot by Emma Summerton.

The Milan installations will remain on view until February 24. Two days later, Enninful’s vision for Prada’s new Saint Petersburg store will be unveiled. We hope to see a reenactment of Stonewall as a less-than-subtle dig at Putin's heinous anti-gay laws.

Segundas Pieles>Animals in Clothes

Animals in Clothes

Now that Fashion Month is winding down, you'll need a new distraction. Animals in clothes, perhaps? Through the magic of Photoshop (never let anyone tell you it's bad), Madrid-based advertising photographer Miguel Vallinas has dressed up nearly 50 animals — i.e. zebra, peacock, goat, swan, deer — in uncredited clothing. In Segundas Pieles (Second Skins), he's thus taken fanciful anthropomorphic notions to realistic and humorous extremes. Plus, no animals were harmed or embarrassed.

MIDDLE TO HIGH-END WOMEN'S WEAR
When international buyers visits the winter fairs in Copenhagen, VISION will be the it-destination if the brand hunt is committed to women's wear collections in the middle to high-end section. The strictly defined fair concept is news to the majority according to VISION's Communications Manager: "I understand why confusion may occur. First - on the Copenhagen fashion scene - there was CPH Vision in Øksnehallen - then emanated sister trade show Terminal 2 in Lokomotivværkstedet based on the street wear, sports and denim segment. After critical evaluation of the many Copenhagen destinations, CPH Vision and Terminal-2 merged into VISION in 2012. This is the fourth season in the name of VISION and today we have returned to our original dna. VISION AW14 showcase will consist of agencies and brands within women's wear, - shoes and – accessories. Middle to high-end." says Trine Fruergaard.

LACK OF SYNERGY WITH STREETWEAR

Visitors of the Copenhagen fashion fairs all represents store concepts built upon individual consumption strategies. - Few stores carry a brand mix covering both street wear and VISION’s segment of women’s wear brands:

"VISION’s function as a link between exhibitors and visitors were not optimal. Our identity became diffuse in the merger with Terminal-2. With a clear showcase of women's wear, VISION has rebuilt the starting point of CPH Vision's success" elaborates Trine Fruergaard.
VISION has a loyal core of especially Nordic women’s wear agencies and brands that have played an essential role in the current identity. – Involving brands as Ilse Jacobsen, Rosemunde, Stylesnob, Henriette Steffensen, Tusnelda Bloch, By Ti Mo and Chill Norway. Newcomer exhibitors at the VISION includes Whiite, Birgitte Herskind, Elise Gug , Hoss and Kudibal.

VISION FOR EMERGING DESIGNERS
The only exceptions to VISION’s stated women’s wear selection, can occur within the inspirational design talents. Parallel to VISION, project Designers' Nest is successfully running on 10th year. - A philanthropic designer competition dedicated to promote new talent. In addition to a cash prize, the participants also wins a stand at VISION for two seasons. - Indifferent to price structure and design categorization.

Bernhard Willhelm

Again abandoning the catwalk for his men's collection, Bernhard Willhelm created his own rainbow-colored apocalyptic world.

Like dozing zombies, his pale models were strewn about a dimly lit space reminiscent of a vault. Their garb, however, writhed with life. Separates were saturated with Kool-Aid colors and overlaid with ragtag fabrics and patterns, not unlike foreign fruit in a night market.
Knotted rope held together ensembles or wrapped around shoes, implying an unravelling, while jackets with feathered puff sleeves suggested angels among the heathens. But it’s unlikely any saints will be found in this rather dark presentation.

Brian Atwood's - ORGY

The orgy scenes of Brian Atwood's new fall campaign are getting a lot of attention, but beyond their furtive blue glow lies an array of products on the e-store that are sure to put you in the mood. The site—launched yesterday in advance of the brand's Madison Ave store later this month—carries the largest selection of Brian Atwood offerings in the world, from shoes and bags to online exclusives and fashion films. One such film, The Sex Is In the Heel, shows Candice Swanepoel in lace-up thigh highs, making out with a wall of monitors projecting what appears to be herself in a group setting. Meta-hot!
