“Fashion has to Make Sense” - Stella Jean For FashionABLE Haiti

Stella Jean For FashionABLE Haiti -
“Fashion has to Make Sense”

"Haiti is the island of mysticism and painting (Malraux) and it is through painting, that this great country tells its story; its stories. And it is these stories that these clothes narrate and it is this gift that I disseminate and imprint on my fabrics. Making the history of Haiti and the art naif a wearable art, which despite its “naif” denomination has a profound theoretical corpus. It is a cheerful art even when it expresses a drama, that with simple strokes and generous colors, does not allow mystifying intermediaries".

The collection created by designer Stella Jean, "Still a Goddess" presented at Alta Roma Alta Moda in the competition “Who's on Next”, promotes and is an integrating part of the project "Fashion-Able Haiti”[1], organized by the Embassy of Haiti in Italy and part of the program "Fashion for Development".

"Fashionable Haiti", is a partner of the "Fashion for Development", part of the “
First Ladies Gala Luncheon” will take place in NYC in a non disclosed location and will not be at the United Nations. FashionAble Haiti is a program that Fashion 4 Development supports.

Her Excellency the Ambassador of Haiti, Ms. Geri Benoit is the creator of "FashionABLE Haiti." The edition of Vogue Italy for the month of July is a special dedication to both the project and its creator. The article, in addition to being focused on the program, highlights the historical part of the Napoleonic invasion and colonization
and the subsequent Haitian independence (1804).

The goal of "FashionABLE Haiti" is to boost the economy and the country’s revival through fashion.
"We are working on creating Sustainable jobs": The vèvè embroidery and the naif painted on the clothes, as part of the Caribbean artistic tradition, textiles and culture, will be made on Italian fabrics by Haitian painters and embroiderers. The result is a combination of Two Excellencies on the same label: the tailoring of the "Made in Italy" which includes the design, the cutting and the packaging and the Art and Craft of the Haitian "Hand-painted & Hand-embroidered".

The project has two basic purposes:

  • The first is to help the victims of the earthquake of January 12, 2010, and subsequent epidemics like deadly cholera. Rebuilding and restarting two specialties, such as painting and embroidery, distinctive of the craftsmanship economy and of Haitian 'religion'. Thus offering work and not just charity, safeguarding the dignity of a proud people.
  • The second reveals the desire to start a collaboration and "constructive" dialogue between Italy & Haiti.

Still a Goddess Concept-Mood.. Despite the mud and the tragedy
She remains…a Goddess ...

The collection dedicated to Haiti recalls the Essence of Spirituality and the gestures of Voodoo ceremonies that characterize the island. Haiti 1804 First black republic in the world, the first colony of deported slaves that gained independence. A proud people who defeated Napoleon's troops. The red and blue color the victory flag with the words "Liberté ou la Mort."

Red and blue are the recurring colors of this collection where the female deities (mambo), chewing tobacco, wearing striped shirts and big muddy shoes taken from the bosses, finally cross freely the now uncultivated plantations. Lavish jewelery around their necks, involuntary colonial legacy. Emeralds, rubies and diamonds resting on fabrics soaked with sweat and rum.

The Creole culture is the union of two civilizations, the African and the European, which merge creating a third, the Creole. When the constituent elements of one or the other are so ingrained as to prevent merging, they overlap, creating a visceral syncretism, which by its nature evokes a "trompe l'oeil" full of emotions.

The tradition of Italian tailoring and design blends with the ritual art of
naif paintings and haitian vèvè[2] embroideries originating from Africa. All of this is spectacular in form and unique in its content.

· Clothes resulting from transcendental trance, on which spotless linens are swallowed up in a chromatic bulimia, in which water, earth, air, fire, follow each other in a dance fever with no apparent sense.

· Drunken Priestesses dressed in ceremonial clothing of large volumes which offset the naiveté of the matronly cuts.

· White robes infringed by sacrificial red, by brown from the dirt beaten like a drum by nervous bare feet, streaked by yellow, the claws of war, the cocks ready to attack in the arena.

  • Monochrome backgrounds on which you can jag the strong, bright, vibrant and defined creole colors. Without shades, only a full awareness of its overall dramatic tension.

[1]"Fashion-Able Haiti" is a project organized by the Embassy of Haiti in Italy. Born a year after the earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince, the capital of the Caribbean in Haiti, killing more than 300 000 people. The island , who was hit by Hurricane Jeanne in the summer of 2004 and January 2010 by a disastrous earthquake, is living in a state of humanitarian emergency. There is currently an international aid mission under UN auspices, which sees the presence of a contingent led by Brazil

Stela Jean
is a young designer of Haitian descent, born and resident in Rome. She grew up in a family where art, fashion and beauty were attributes present in everyday life. Her mother, an actress, a very elegant woman passionate about fashion, made her debut in a film by Alberto Sordi, and still is the main source of inspiration for the designer. Her father is also an artist who designs and creates jewelry.

Stella Jean's passion for style and fashion is a dream that began to unravel on the catwalk when she paraded for the first time with Egon von Furstenberg’s wedding gown. Her modeling past has given her a training 'in the field' where she experienced hours of fitting and hectic back-stages.

Stella Jean’s style reflects and evokes her Creole heritage that blends her continent’s two cultures: the ancient and dreamy of the old and the verve and modern of the new. The two opposites unite, intertwine and merge to give birth to a precious womanhood.

Stella Jean creates her clothes skipping the step of the design, therefore following the thought of Madeleine Vionnet for whom it is essential to drape and shape the dress directly on the body, noting that "... having your body in three dimensions, it is impossible to rely on paper".

Stella Jean learns the art of painting on fabric from Nadia Valli. "Painting on fabric requires, in addition to considerable preparation, a remarkable talent, an artistic sensibility, a tradition of craftsmanship and patience. These are the ingredients of my idea of “Slow Fashion”. Clothing created by Stella Jean, is not a mass-produced clothing but instead is a specialized craft.

Stella Jean will dress Lisa Drouillard, Miss New York Teen USA 2011, for Miss Teen USA pageant that will be held in Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas the 16 of July.

Collections: Jeune Belle et Gatée (2009), Oysters don't lie (2010) and Still a Godess, a collection dedicated to Haiti and submitted to the competition “Who's on Next” July 2011 Edition.

Stella Jean is also passionate about literature. Pirandello is her favorite writer.

Clothing by Jan-Jan Van Essche

Jan-Jan Van Essche Makes Men's Clothes as Chill-Pilled and Dreadlocked as He Is

by Fanny Khoo

I met Jan-Jan Van Essche at his studio-cum-store, the Atelier Solarshop, tucked away in a non-gentrified neighborhood of Antwerp. Chill-pilled and dreadlocked, Jan-Jan was accompanied by his better half, Pietro Celestino, who likens himself to a cheerleader ("Go, Jan-Jan, Go!") "Pietro is the first person who sees my collection," Jan-Jan clarifies, to which Pietro replies, "Yeah, someone who gives him the first objective view," eliciting from Jan-Jan: "What are you saying? You're never objective."

It's a miracle anything gets done, which may explain Jan-Jan's one-collection-per-year maxim. "It's my philosophy and a way of life," he says. "It means I can concentrate on one collection at a time. I would go crazy if I had to design three times a year. Besides, I don't wear different stuff throughout the year. Winter or summer clothes are not so different for me. You just pile on more clothes during the winter and take some off in the summer."

Primarily a line of high-end basics for men, Jan-Jan's clothes also possess a vaguely ethnic, urban nomad, unisex appeal. "In fact," he says, "half of my customers are women and the fit is just as good, where the female body flows." To prove his point, when a woman came in and tried on a shirt, on her it became a loose shirt-dress that, when worn with a luxurious wool leggings, looked fantastic.

Not everyone could be equally inspired by Mali and Madeleine Vionnet, but Jan-Jan isn't like everyone. "I was in Mali and loved the fluidity in the way they wear their clothes. Everything had a perfect place when draped. So I decided not to design in sizes; my pieces are cut to fit. Madeleine Vionnet has also been a huge inspiration for me, especially the early years. I like the way she used ethnic patterns and draping to let the body speak for itself. She did this in a very avant-garde way and I can only imagine how liberating her clothes must have been for women in the 1920s."

After only two collections, there is already a cult following of early adopters who share a penchant for his unaffected, Muji-esque looks (albeit with a more sophisticated price range). "I am quite lucky. I know a lot of my customers. I see them and talk to them. It's growing steadily. It's worth all those long dark years."

Artisanal- Bringing the Craft to the Fore' Tarun Tahiliani Bridal Couture - Apsara

The touch of the artisan is irrefutably the secret ingredient to a timeless couture! The best works in fashion can only culminate after the collective effort of unique design and traditional craftsmanship. With the Tarun Tahiliani Bridal Couture Exposition 2011, we will keep the tradition alive by showcasing the finest work-of-art and the impeccable workmanship behind it.

The exposition themed “Artisanal- Bringing the Craft to the Fore’ promises a new benchmark in showcasing India’s rich heritage styled in a contemporary manner. In what will be a fusion of Indian Couture and international construction, the collections will be an amalgamation of the finest weaves, embroideries, jewels, stones and unique techniques.

Keeping in mind the tradition of the event, the “Swarovski Apsara” will adorn the venue helping create a world of grandiose and vibrant beauty. Symbolic for the ephemeral enchantress, Swarovski Apsara - will be the muse for the bridal couture exposition.

Talking about the Apsara, Tarun Tahiliani said “The Apsara is the symbol of the exposition - giving a new modern shine through use of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS to a traditional form - as is the thrust of Bridal Couture Exposition this year. A new way for our glorious artisanal traditions.”

He added, “Swarovski has teamed with TT since 1990 and once again collaborate in the use of their avant-garde material for use in textiles, accessories, shoes and all forms of ornamentation. We are delighted to be forging this collaboration ahead, once again".

“We are delighted that our long standing association with Tarun Tahiliani has been redefining luxurious weddings and raised Indian bridal fashion to the level of artistry via this collaboration with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Tarun is one of India’s most celebrated designers and we are very pleased to be able to support him at every important landmark in his career. The focal installation that will grace the Bridal Exposition is the Apsara that has always been an inspiration to Tarun; he has studded this dramatic creation with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS to create a magnificent sparkling look for this illustrious exhibition. The sparkle of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS will shine brilliantly and personify how Indian couture revels in a new era marked by traditional yet modern sparkling sensuality.” said Sanjay Sharma, Director, SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, Swarovski India.

The exquisite Apsara will set the stage for the magnificence of stylish displays and the celebration of femininity. The embodiment of Indian grace and femininity, the Apsara will be draped in classical forms and laden with crystals. Encrusted in a dazzling mix of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, it will be the perfect Indian modern symbol of this year’s Bridal Couture Exposition 2011. The artistic 350 kilogram 6 foot sculpture will also complement the intricate stone and jaali designs of the couture collections and is bound to enthrall the audience.

The couture collection will enchant every woman to discover their inner Apsara!

About Tarun Tahiliani Bridal Couture Exposition 2011

In its third season now, the Exposition promises a new benchmark in the showcase of India’s rich heritage styled in a contemporary manner. The theme chosen for this year is ‘Artisanal- Bringing the Craft to the Fore’- an entirely novel blend of Indian finery with a layered western construct.

The first 2 editions of the Tarun Tahiliani Bridal Couture exposition met with great success due to the distinctive nature of its concept, the grandeur of its spaces and diverse stories. This exposition promises to bring the processes of creating a garment to the fore and educate the customers on the techniques that create luxury and fine fit.

This first-of-its-kind bridal couture event is scheduled across the four cities starting in New Delhi at India’s premiere luxury destination- The DLF Emporio from July 9-13, 2011 and being followed by Mumbai at the finest hospitality icon – The Four Seasons Hotel from July 23-24, 2011; will then move to Hyderabad at the newly launched luxury hotel The Park Hyderabad from August 6-7, 2011 and will end its four city tour at Kolkata’s iconic hotel-The Park Kolkata from August 20-21, 2011.

Woolrich Arctic Parka/14 oz. Berlin

Limited special edition Woolrich Arctic Parka for 14 oz. Berlin

The Woolrich Arctic Parka makes no compromises! It is a constant, reliable companion on both expeditions in icy conditions and wintry voyages of discovery to metropolises like New York, Moscow or – Berlin. Exclusively for the Berlin 14 oz. store, the oldest US-American outerwear brand Woolrich is re-releasing the legendary Arctic Parka in a limited edition of 600 coats worldwide for the A/W 2011/12 season: in five new colours and made for the first time from Byrd Cloth.

Karl-Heinz Müller, managing director and owner of 14 oz.: "There's no getting past the Arctic Parka: it's a classic, a must-have for every winter. With the limited special edition in five fantastic new colours we are joining forces with Woolrich to acknowledge the great popularity of the Arctic Parka at 14 oz."

Founded in 1830 by John Rich and his brothers, traditional company Woolrich is synonymous with functional and timeless jackets. The symbiosis of tradition and modernity, of long-lasting products and robust materials are the reasons behind the brand's huge success. Woolrich originally designed the Arctic Parka for the workers constructing the pipeline from Alaska to North America in the year 1972. And to this very day the thick down filling still protects from extreme winds, persistent snowstorms and freezing cold temperatures as low as -40° Celsius. During winter, the adjustable hood with coyote fur trim is regularly seen protecting the ruddy faces of urban workers from wind, rain and snow.

The Arctic Parka made from Byrd Cloth is a homage to the reliable functionality of the Woolrich classic – and based on the faithful reproduction of the rediscovered Byrd Cloth material, takes it one step further. In the 1930s Admiral E. Richard Byrd developed the fabric, which, due to the density of its structure alone, is water-repellent and windproof. He had it patented as the first American cotton fabric and it was successfully used during the Byrd Antarctica expedition in the year 1939. While researching for the new collection the Woolrich design team came across the historic fabric and asked an Italian fabric manufacturer to reproduce the matt, robust and breathable material.

Made in Italy to exacting quality standards Woolrich is presenting the Arctic Parka made from Byrd Cloth exclusively for 14 oz. in five clean and vibrant colour variations: Bottle Green, Bright Yellow, Royal Blue, Burnt Orange and Dark Navy. Special extras on the limited edition are the YKK metal zip and a second inside pocket with a press stud fastener and the Byrd Cloth label. Consecutive numbering on the joint Woolrich and 14 oz. label makes every parka a unique collector's item. Thanks to its classic silhouette and the width-adjustable waistband the Arctic Parka fits both ladies and men and is available in sizes XXS-XXL. The parka will be available to purchase from July 2011 for 799.90 EUR at 14 oz. Berlin.

Pierre Garroudi's Beauty of the Sea - June'8th'2011@London

‘Beauty of the Sea’

After the success of the last 'Red-Stopping' flash-mob, Pierre Garroudi is planning his second street catwalk, taking to some of London's most distinguished avenues with his cast of models and dancers.

This exciting campaign will showcase the Turquoise Collection; 'Beauty of the Sea' which conveys an aesthetically pleasing experience of creatures born of a mystical island, Lost in the ocean. Pierre's signature style is prominent throughout. Hand-crafted intricacy is formed through beautiful fabric manipulation; technically. its all about volume and
texture.

Multi-layered matte and sheen silks become second skin to the wearer, portraying scales of reptilian kinds in all their beauty. Magnificent ruffled head pieces and elongated silhouettes are reflective to those of a mermaid, while luxuriously draped necklaces represent secret ocean treasures.

Join Pierre on his sensational voyage on June 8th. The flash-mob of 20 models will kickstart the journey at 2pm from Pierre Garroudi's gallery in London Bridge. The team will travel to Bond Street using one of London's busiest tube lines, finally ending in the
acclaimed area, Knightsbridge. Yet again, this will create huge hype with the intention to out-shine the first. Flash-mob II is a promising head-turner, this time pulling even more surprises from his neatly sewn sleeve.

Closed by 14 oz.

f.l.t.r.: Til Nadler (Managing Director Closed GmbH), Karl-Heinz Müller (Owner and Managing Director 14 oz.), Gordon Giers (Managing Director Closed GmbH)

Closed by 14 oz.

Early in July, Hamburg-based company Closed will open the first Closed store in Berlin-Mitte on Alte Schönhauser Straße in cooperation with 14 oz.

Closed by 14 oz. is a new, individual retail concept: high quality materials and traditional design elements are the basis for the authentic interior. Urban, casual and sophisticated – the Closed collections and the 14 oz. philosophy perfectly complement each other.

Gordon Giers, managing director of Closed GmbH: "We are delighted to be finally opening a Closed Store in Berlin and with 14 oz. we have the best partner on our side. Our many years of experience with Karl-Heinz Müller have shown us that our brands, ideas and concepts harmonise very well and have a high success potential. We are looking forward to working together in this cooperation."

Karl-Heinz Müller, owner and managing director of 14 oz.: "We have already been working very successfully with Closed for four seasons now. The collections are enjoying great popularity amongst our 14 oz. customers, and it is with pleasure that we could register the brand's strong potential for turnover and development. Our businesses are linked by a partnership based on friendship, and the wish arose on both sides to continue expanding the brand and to work together on its development. The Closed by 14 oz. store concept is a public demonstration of our strong connection. We are really looking forward to this successful collaboration."
